I don't know why you even bothered to post the logical answer to this dilemma with proper documentation lowrider. Just because common sense and the Owner's Manual tell you to do it that way, I'm sure that every expert here knows better the manufacturers of the car and than the way it's been done since the dawn of automotive history. I bet someone else will post with a different way and an explanation of why their way is better; or dissent that the Owner's Manual way is just wrong.

Also: Do you KNOW for certain that the incident above was purely because the parking brake wasn't being used or that the vehicle was in 1st gear, or "Park," as per the car in question.

Either one would have prevented the car from moving.
It would slide first-

D'ya think the parking brake would stop the slide??
being older doesnt make you wiser....

how would a parking brake cable rust with the e-brakes being pulled?

It sounds like you may be in the same category, even after 55 yrs of driving.
No offense intended.

I can guarantee you, you know not of what you speak when it comes to the extreme harshness of winters in the UP of MI.
We get 250"-300" of snow up here every winter. My car remains completely white with salt for 5-6 months of the year. Nothing you can do about it except rinse it off once a week.
Within a mile of the carwash, it's white again.

So tell me, what climate you've lived in that's comparable???
I'm not talking a couple months, or even a yr.
That won't do.
I mean exposure to this kind of salt for many yrs running with the same vehicle.

Certainly not Tuscon.

I'm in the position of "once bitten, twice shy."
I've had two of the them "freeze up" on me, and when they choose to lock up at -20F, it's pretty damn inconvenient out in the middle of nowhere.
30-40 yrs ago, you sometimes could get some WD-40 or something into the cable and sometimes get it to work for a bit, but invariably, they locked up.
Nowadays, the cables are sealed much better, and you can't get any kind of stuff in there without extreme difficulty.
Anything but road salt, that is. The salt still gets in there, somehow.

The ONLY drawback I see to not having a parking brake is an emergency stop.
Any port in a storm, at that point, and the parking brake would be better than nothing.
At that point, not using it at all lessens the chance that it'll work correctly in that situation.

If I had lived in a warmer climate for most of my life, maybe I wouldn't think like this---------but I didn't.

Winters up here are heavy duty-

my driveway is to0 steep, putting it in gear doesnt stop it from rolling down the driveway. The parking brake does though.

LOL, I LOVE post like this. Well you can fix the parking brake cable, it is called replacing it. I have never heard of any part on a car that could not be replaced. BTW, 13 years of driving for me grandpa. I have been driving long enough to know you can replace/fix a part on a car and have done replaced a lot of crap on cars when I was much younger.

I know for certain the issue was caused by not having the parking brake on. The guy had it in first which allowed the car to roll forward into the car parked in front of it. It wasn't much but caused the alarm to go off on the other car and for the SFs to come check out the situation and discover the parking brake wasn't on. IF the parking brake was on this wouldn't have happened. Put your parking brake on and then get out of your car and see if you can push it forward or backward. See how it doesn't move?

Just so you know, since you are probably from the time when you had to start your car by turning the crank in the front of the car, cars made today are made from parts that tend to take a long time to rust. They don't make cars like they do back when you were my age. The parking brake cable I doubt is made out of material that could rust just because of something like this happening. So if I was you I would start using the parking brake and put it in gear when you are parked. DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE PARKING BRAKE. It is your friend.

i leave it out of gear & with the parking brake on. unless i'm on a hill, then i'll put it in gear. but I put the parking brake on first, let off the brake, let the parking brake grab, and then put it in gear

This car even has an idiot warning if you forget to release it fully that tells you to release it as soon as you start to move with it on.

using the brake has no effect on how quickly the cable might rust, there is still no reason to not use your parking brake

brake pads wear when the rotor is turning and the you apply the brakes, squeezing the pad to make it stop moving.

If the car is stopped there's no wear to the pads. That's just silly, IMO
