paddle shifters
Performance wise, however, it seems they're making huge strides in AT performance. I'm hoping the paddle shifters will be as cool as they sound (first car I've had to have them)...and give a bit more of that feeling of controlling the car when I want to. Then...at other times...stop-and-go traffic and I've got a cup of coffee and a smoke in my hand, then I can let the car do its own thing.
But still, I prefer a 3 pedal setup any day of the week. Nothing beats the feel of a traditional stick and clutch IMO.
The AT vs 6MT debate will always be about preference of each individual, but I must say i did have a blast test driving an auto with the paddles.
The one thing I liked was when merging on the freeway on a sharp on ramp, I tend to put both hands on the wheel. This allowed me to really concentrate on the cornering without having to let go even for a split second. It is definitely a strong selling point for the ATs.
However, when I returned to the dealership to take out the 6MT, it just felt more natural and in tune with the car when you have a clutch and stick. Plus during the drive my girl said it turned her on so much when I shifted fast she wanted to jump on me. Can't argue with that.
Who ever said sex doesn't sell?

For that "visceral" connection to the car, I can see what you're saying. Back in the day, I had a 6 speed Trans Am (no laughing!) and later an automatic...6 speed *definitely* more fun to drive.

The OP started this thread to discuss the Paddle shifters, can we please NOT turn this into another 5AT vs 6MT discussion?
I love using the paddle shifters. A few of us over on Driver went on a Quebec roadtrip back in July. Part of our trip had some really good twisities (see below) and I loved using the paddles. It teaches you to keep your hands at 3 and 9 o'clock.
