Day in Cresson

I am getting ready to schedule my 1/2 day at the track in Cresson that Grubbs sponsors for new buyers. Can anyone let me know what to expect when I go. First time that I have ever done anyting like this.

My assumption is that you will be using your own car.

I've done the Apex Driving Academy before and it was a blast. At the time I think they only had the 1.7mi road course at Motorsport Ranch. It's been a while since I've been out there. I think they have a longer more challenging course with a lot of elevation changes.

If it is anything like Apex, the morning is a training session where they get you familiar with driving the car and the turns in the road course. I think it is recommended to change your oil before the event. Obviously, make sure your tires and brake pads are in good shape.

Maybe bring some basic tools with you. The last time I was out there, I had just installed Stillen sways. I wanted to make my rear sway bar just a little bit tighter, but didn't have the right tools to do so. I had to contend with a lot of understeer, which isn't all that fun.

What to expect? Expect to have a lot of fun. Expect to have a quick dose of adrenaline as you "really" hang it out there for the first time. I remember the last thing the instructor said when he cut us loose. "This is a racing session not a drifting session".

If you get a chance it may be worth it to have one of the instructors drive your car or have them sit in the car with you. They can show you "the line".

I did the 1.7 mile course May of 2006, it was 95 degrees that day which was better than the first time I went in March when we got rained out.

Since my car is modded and it was a hot day and you really push your car, I got it ready... drained and filled the radiator with only 15% coolant 85% water and added some "water wetter" additive. Changed the oil with Royal Purple. Bled the brakes with ATE high temp brake fluid. And last but not least ... 6 gallons of 105 octane unleaded on top of about a 1/2 tank of 93 octane.

That day the 1.7 mile track was running counter-clockwise. Most of the morning was classroom training with APEX driving academy. We did some low speed driving just to get the feel of the track. By afternoon we were doing 20 minute runs with in-car instructors, each time you learn a little more about your car and how far you can push her.

The G was running incredible that day and I didn't get passed by anyone until my last 20 minute session when one of the regular's brought his 2006 Corvette Z06 with track rubber out ... wow was that thing fast!

I had one "incident" during the day where I spun out. It was a little scary but in the end I think at least I knew how far I could push it. I was right behind a guy in his Porsche 911 convert and we were at the start of the course where there are some pretty big elevation changes. By this time my instructor told me that I shouldn't brake going into the turn at the bottom of the elevation change ... unfortunately the Porsche in front of me wasn't so confident and I saw his brakes lights. I freaked and tapped my brakes but I was already at the limit as I was entering the turn and I felt the back end start to come around and any amount of oversteer wasn't going to prevent it. Luckily I just skidded off the edge to a stop facing the opposite direction and those behind me were able to easily steer by me. They call you on the radio to pull into pit so they can check out the car but all was good.

Have fun and be safe!

Trying to plan the wedding now. I leave it to my fiancee. I sold the Vortech kit to Moog and turned around and bought the wedding dress.
But, it's okay cause I'm happy Moog got the thing working.
