How To Install an OEM R35 GTR Wing on a G Coupe (w/ Pics)
Hey G37 fans,
I installed an R35 Nissan GTR wing on my coupe, and wanted to share the process. It's a rare mod, but a few people have pulled it off, and it's absolutely worth it, for risk takers IMO. Spoilers/wings can be controversial mods, but as long as the G has wheels and suspension first, its a dope and clean mod, IMO. Disclaimer: do at your own risk.
I had the wing painted to QAA color code, to match the G.
Lets begin by seeing the final result first.
The OEM GTR wing has screws that are molded into the wing, no nuts, so it was actually easier to align and drill the holes than doing guess work. Here's what it looks like:
Once I aligned the position of the wing, I used a pencil to draw around the screws, so I'll know where to drill. You want to make sure you draw out the inner screws first.
Once, you drill your first 2 initial holes, the wing will drop down a little, and then you can draw out the other 4 holes. I also drilled a 4th hole on the passenger side for the wiring. (Forgot to take pic.)
I then used a step drill on the inside to make the inner holes big enough, for a 10mm head to fit thru. I did drill initially thru the 2 layers of sheet metal. Important to put something hard underneath the trunk, so you don't drill into the plastics accidentally. I also recommend coating the drilled holes with primer to avoid future rust. I used cotton swap dipped in grey primer sealer and lightly put it in the holes, to make sure it doesn't drip down into unwanted areas.
After that, I wired the rear brake light, cuz you know, you gotta do it right to make it look clean. This step isn't super easy. I taped the wires on a metal stick and pushed them thru the weather protectant.
In order to make the brake light work, you will need to sacrifice the OEM brake light connector and rewire it to the new wires. Not sure what wire gauge you need to use. I just used whatever my local Autozone had. **Get expert advice on wiring specs.**
I used a grey gasket sealant to protect from rain dripping into the trunk. I used 2 washers per screw (dipped in the sealant) on the outer holes due to the design of the G37 coupe trunk.
I would recommend putting sealant around the outer portion where the washers are. Once all was assembled, here are the scars it leaves on the inside of the trunk. Pardon my crappy electrical tape job.
In the end, I really liked the results. I'm a big fan of spoilers and wings, as long as they're done right. Not a lot of people done this mod, so I thought I'd share the step by step process of how I did it. It wasn't the easiest job, but surprisingly nowhere near as hard as I thought it would be.
