I think it was about 4 quarts and a bit with the pan drop and change in filter when I did mine.

One extra thing with the 5at....because you have the top filler port, you can check the temp of the pan with an infrared thermometer and siphon and refill from the top port for the add'l fill and flushes using one of those 5 dollar transfer pumps from harbour freight ( http://www.harborfreight.com/multi-u...ump-66418.html) without even having to raise the car.

:biggthumpup: Thanks for the reply, I was actually curious how much will drain from just opening the drain bolt without a pan drop.

I just performed this on my 2009 X at 136k miles. Everything seems to have went smoothly, put about 100 miles on this and there doesn't appear to be any leaks showing.
I did snap 1 bolt on the pan though. I think it's an M6 (Maybe M8? I can't remember), so I'll be drilling and tapping that as soon as I get a chance for some piece of mind.

If I were to just do a pan drop and refill with Valvoline Maxlife, would that be bad to mix OEM fluid with the Valvoline?

It's Matic S compatible, shouldn't be a problem, but if your G has 70k or more miles I'd do the 3x D&F.

those who haven't done this... i strongly recommend. I was at 87k and got it done today. The fluid was super black.

I'm at 88k miles with my 2011 g37x. Do I need to drop the pan or can I just get away with a drain and flush a few times? How many quarts of fluid does the transmission take?

I bought 4 gallons for the 3x drain & fill (had 1 3/4 qt left over), and yes, I would strongly recommend the pan drop & clean w/ that mileage.

A side rant, I really hate this transmission. I hate it so much that I want to get rid of the car. It's slow, clunky, and generally all around crappy. Hopefully this partial flush will smooth it out.

at such high mileage you might wanna do a drain and fill, instead of 3x drain fill. drive for some time, advised 12-15k, then do it again. I was told you dont wanna shock the tranny, and do this gradually. makes sense to me.

This worked great and thanks to the shutoff valve, the job was done in no time. Did ATF, front and rear diff and transfer case today with manual tools, taking my time, all done in 3-4 hours.

So after owning my now 230k (kilometer) 2010 G37x for 4 months I have changed the transmission fluid for the first time in its life.

Took me about 2 hours to do a simple 5 litre drain, and refill. It would have taken me an hour to do if the pump I had worked better. Notes:

With so much mileage, I didn't want to do a complete drain with pan off but just an initial flush for starters. Time wasn't on my side and I didn't have pan gasket, new bolts or ATF filter either.

I will do a pan off exercise in about another 5-10k, so I can order a new drain plug, gasket, pan gasket and filter and more ATF (went with Valvoline Maxlife). My drain plug is rusted and nearly rounded off, so need a new one.
There's also lots of corrosion on the pan bolts, so I think taking it off won't be a straight forward job, it will be a little challenging.....

The ATF is not so easy to come across here in Toronto, Canada. I used the valvoline max life ATF that is Matic S compatible.

Buy the plunger bottle pump that fits on the top of the bottles ( )

Don't buy the red piston type pump for this job as you don't really have enough hands to work it and hold the pipe in the fill plug of the transmission pan.


I wrapped PTFE taple around the fill tube from my pump to wedge into the fill hole of the transmission pan. Surprisingly this allowed me get a good plug seal that didn't come loose like I was expecting to whilst filling.:JAMIN:

However, the red piston pump kept getting air locked and stopping pumping/over pressurising and this caused the delivery line to blow off at the pump end covering me, the car, and the drive way in ATF.....:eek::mad: Again, I would recommend the top of the bottle plunger type pump to avoid this event!

I also spilt some ATF again due to the stupid pump (and operator!) whilst changing a 1 litre bottle over....:icon27:

The old ATF was bad. It was a very dark brown, to black in colour - tar like goodness! Didn't smell burnt, just aged and used.

I would have loved to seen what inside the pan, and the magnets looked like, but I expect that there will be corroded pan bolts to tackle before I get that far so for now, I'm happy that I got 5 litres of old ATF out, and 5 litres of new in.

I didn't "level" the car and open the fill plug with the car in park and engine running as the exhaust was hot, and it was dark. I took 5 litres out, and put 5 litres in, but I will look at the level check tomorrow evening just to be sure.

I took the car for a spin and it drove as sweet as it did before the ATF change so happy with that. Will put some miles on it over the next week and report if any issues.

I also changed my transmission case fluid (was like new) and the front and rear diff oil(nice and clear) over the last week, along with serpentine belt, plugs, oil and filters. All good there. Should keep the old girl going for a while longer.

a negligible amount of old fluid remains. Don't worry about it
