Butyl sealant tape for headlight sealing

So I have yet another problem with my headlights (Thanks 180 Customs! ). An obscene amount of water (much more than condensation) got inside and caused the HID to stop working. I am fixing it myself because that's the most feasible solution.

Is there anywhere in a local store to find the right stuff? If not, does anyone have leftover butyl sealing tape that they don't need that they can sell me? I can buy it online and it's not expensive but since I only need enough to seal one headlight I figured some member might have surplus form a project that they might want to sell. Let me know if there's a local place that sells it (Houston is a big city) or if I need to get it online. Thanks.

I'm out of town until Tuesday night but I have some leftover from a lifetime shed I build. They had rolls of the butyl tape to seal the skylights and I'll be happy to send you the rest of the roll, should be enough for your light. If you can hang on 'til then I'd be happy to send it to you on my dime.

I would imagine you could also source it locally from an auto-body paint and supplies store. There are usually a few in any given area.

Thanks. Brad, is what you have like OCI butyl tape? That's what I need. I got my headlight working again with a bit of work and a new ballast. I'm sure I can do a better job of sealing it than the clowns at 180 Customs did.

Jeremy,
This is what the tape roll looks like, and is about 3/4 to an inch wide black rubber, wish I was at the house so I could tell you for sure how much I have left. I assume all butyl rubber tape is the same, but Since the application is for sealing skylights I would think they'd be up for sealing headlights.

I believe that will work just fine. When you get home, PM me your PayPal. I'm not going to let you ship it on your dime, the whole point of not buying it from Amazon was to let a fellow member clear it out of their garage and make a buck in the process.

Cool, hope that moisture is a thing of the past.

3 M automtive weather strip works better. I have tried all the above and when I used this stuff 5 years later and zero leaks

Hey Jeremy, also, if you havent sealed it up yet, you can put in a couple of those silica gel packs that come in packages. It'll help keep the moisture out.

It's sealed up but that's temporary. repaired the HID because I need to get it inspected before the end of the month and then I have to open it up again to repair my fog light (broke the piece where the ground wire goes). Fog lights don't need to be functional to pass safety inspection so I'll go back in to fix those after I find the part I need.

Wouldn't the gel packs move around inside the housing or get too hot? Wouldn't they be pretty much useless after the first moisture they absorbed?
