So I busted my first Porter Cable today! w00t
I have a 6 inch backing plate and counterweight. I guess I was putting too much pressure on the pad on speed 6 and it suddenly snapped off. Thankfully I lifted the PC just in time for it to not hit my car (video game reflexes LOL).
Yeah it's completely seized up--won't turn on at all. Here's a picture of the backing plate threading. I figured you'd guys would be proud.

I smell a Flex 3401 in your future 
You won't need as much pressure to correct imperfections and you'll get your results in half the time. Safer alternative than jumping right to a rotary buffer.
