There are other factors that affects your rate probably that makes your rate skyrocket recently. If you aren't happy with your current insurance company might as well find another one. If you're getting a quote online try http://www.yepmarket.com/cheap-full-...car-insurance/.

Good old ICBC has changed from when we were that young, guessing you're a bit older than 21. I remember when all you had to do was have your license and every year was 10% discount. Now, if I remember correctly, ICBC gives out 5% per year but you also have to have a vehicle insured in your name so chances are he is only at 15% due to not having a vehicle insured in his name at 16.

ICBC actually does it a different way. Every one person gets the same discount increments.

When I was checking where I stood on the CRS, I confirmed with the agent that it's purely based on years accumulated of claim-free driving since you've acquired your driver's license (from the Learners Permit). Having a vehicle insured under your name doesn't affect the way the discount is calculated. So if you got your license at 16 and was checking when you're 21, you should stand at Level 5, or 25% discount. So you just accumulate up to a maximum discount of 43%, which would be Level 9. But as the CRS goes higher than level 9 (maximum of 20), there are changes to what happens when you get a claim, you fall fewer levels as you accumulate them. Also your optional premiums can have a higher discount than the 43%.

Thanks for the update! I've been in Alberta for almost two years (hate it) and hope to be coming back to B.C. shortly.

That's funny, since a lot of people I know actually are moving TO Alberta.

But as always, remember to request your claim/insurance history from Alberta so you can translate that into the CRS if you plan on coming back. Don't know how they treat your discount if you've pretty much been "inactive" in the province for a long period.

I moved here only because I was transferred and have longed to get back ever since. Sure the cheaper fuel and one tax is nice.. but the rest is **** in my opinion. Wanna go to the mountains for a hike? 3 hour drive there, 3 hour drive back (banff). Want to go sailing on the ocean? What body of water? Mosquitoes everywhere to the point you can't stand still outdoors lest you be attacked by them. I could go on but its just my own gripe and off topic.

Insurance in AB was easy. They recognized my history with ICBC and put me in the "elite" status since I was 43% discount and no accidents since I was 16 (currently 36) and I am expecting to receive the same again when/if I get back. Time will tell to see though.
