Buying a '11 IPL
Buying a '11 IPL
I am in the market for a used IPL and wanted your thoughts on what I should offer. I have been researching these cars for the past 2 months and think I have a decent grasp on the market.
Car in question: 2011 IPL Automatic, 30k miles. It has been on dealer's lot for 2 months. They were asking 29k for it but then attempt to tack on $2000+ in ridiculous fees which I refuse to pay. I was trying to get the car for 28k+TTL which I thought was reasonable for both parties. I am trying to sell my trade independently, as they were raising the price of the vehicle to balance out the additional value they were giving on my trade. They wanted 32k for their car which I think is too high. I believe they are in the car for 26-27k, purchased from auction. The big selling point for me was the car wasn't registered until 2012, so I have about 2.5 years of factory warranty remaining should something go wrong. Car is loaded as all the IPLs are and appears to be in very nice condition. One rim is slightly curbed and the front bumper is a bit scuffed. Other than that it seems to drive nicely even though I will bring it to a trusted mechanic as a condition to purchase.
Thanks again!

Thanks Byron. Do you think my offer is fair or a bit unrealistic/optimistic? I am fine with a G37s too, but really like the IPL. I like it $3000 more--but not much more than that.
Matt I am in the same boat....all the 2011 IPL's near me have 18 - 25K miles and sell for $32,000 - $37,000. I am more interested in getting an IPL but I don't want to pay that for a used 2011.
I unfortunate have to say that what We want to pay for an IPL is unrealistic seeing as they are Rare G37's and Dealerships see it as such.
a G37s is my second choice too...Those could be had for our price offerings but who wants a plain ol G37s LOL
Gimmie that IPL

Haha, exactly. The IPL is pure sex even though the G37s is sweet too. I love the red seats (which is what I have in my car now) or the contrast stitching. The slight hp increase is barely noticeable but still there. I read the larger brakes are the same between the IPL & S. The IPL has a slightly firmer suspension than the S and different front bumper fascia.
I am coming from a BMW so I am looking for the best performance I can get in a more reliable Japanese vehicle. Are you looking for stick or auto? It's really hard to find a G37 sport in auto as it has to be a Journey which was equipped with the Sports Package.
I had almost solidified a deal on a correctly priced '10 higher mileage anniversary edition, but they were lowballing me hard on my trade. There is a reason the IPL's didn't sell too well; they were overpriced for the slight performance increase (I believe msrp 54k for auto 52k for manual) and couldn't compete with "comparable" sports enthusiast vehicles which were a bit more money from German rivals.
I truly don't think this now 3+ year old vehicle is worth over 28k even though there are obviously people out there who will pay more.

MattR82, out of curisoity which beemer are you coming from, I have a cousin whose been driving a 335i and swears by them, was convincing me to go for it, but I have been nissan/infiniti fan, as I think for the money they make nice cars. plus there's something about the g37, i find it a perfect balance between performance, reliability, interior, exterior, practicality(as practical a coupe can be) and price.
This will be my first Infiniti. I am a bit of a Beemer fan. I had a used 00 323i RWD sport which was a blast to drive but purchased with 70k on the ticker and sold since it was becoming a big money pit. I had an 06 330xi which was a pretty good car and fairly reliable. I don't think I would go AWD again since I missed the RWD feel. I traded that car in for my current car, a 135i. It has the same engine as the 335i (imo the smoothest and best on the market under 50k) but is a bit lighter and feels more nimble and go-cartish. The 135 is superior to the 335 imo as I feel the 3 series has gotten far too large. My car is a coupe but still has reasonable back seat space unlike the G37. The size is a bit larger than the mini cooper, similar to the E46 3 series which I always felt was the perfect size for the car. The car is a blast to drive but I am nearing the end of my CPO warranty and concerned about long term reliability. The car eats through tires and wheels like no tomorrow as I live in the Northeast. I drove a 335i before the G37 and couldn't wait to get back in my car. It felt heavy and boat-like (both cars had the sports package). The g37 is a car I always liked but never really considered. A lot of my friends have one so I have a fair amount of time behind the wheel. The car does everything well, but the handling and overall engine refinement are not up to BMW standards. I am willing to make the sacrifice though if I can get 4+ years of trouble free use. I will probably go back to BMW at some point or hopefully Porsche
but for now I can only afford one car.

Have you researched the sales tax angle. If you trade in a vehicle, most states that tax autos will allow you a credit off the selling price. So, a $20k vehicle traded in at the dealer would lower your tax liability by $1,800 if the sales tax rate was 9%. If you sold it outright, you would have to sell it for more than $1,800 the amount the dealer offered to break even. Also, some counties or states do not reciprocate the full taxable amount. I think TN is one where a non resident gets stuck with paying the sales tax and only a portion is allowed when registering in their home state. If the dealer does not collect sales tax, you will have around 30 days to register it.
I am a retired sales tax auditor and have purchased many autos out of state. Be sure and check the sales taxes. That could possibly be where the out of state dealer is jacking the price up by $2k

Hi Lacarnut,
Thank you for the reply. I am definitely aware of the tax break which is the main reason I tried to trade the car in. In this instance it would be around $1000. The annoyance of selling it is worth something too. Even with the tax break, the car was still being undervalued between $1500-2000 which was significant enough to warrant trying to sell it independently.
