Should I buy the 08 6MT G37S?

Hello G37 owners,

I am interested in purchasing a 6MT '08 G37S, but have been reading into problems with the clutch going bad at random times (5k-60k miles). Since this is used, that means that the clutch will of course be worn, but should I be worried about replacing it later on? How many of you guys have had this problem? Will I have to replace the clutch out of my own pocket, or will the dealership cover it?

Thanks for all your help G37 owners!

Clutch is a wear item. If you're buying an 08, expect some wear and for the dealership not to cover it.

That said, I have 30k on mine and it feels fine. I don't do launches or track days with it though--I just drive it to work with a smile. Having been on these forums for the last 2 years, it really isn't something that gets discussed a lot, and we have quite a few 6mt owners.

My biggest complaint is the high, abrupt and complete lack of feeling with the engagement of the clutch. There are two simple mods to help alleviate that though (twisting a rod and replacing the spring with a weaker one).

So the clutch should truly not be a big problem for me if I decide to purchase a G37S?

The only sure way to know the clutch condition is to take it apart. Once apart, observe the condition of the flywheel and measure the thickness of the friction disk, comparing it to new/worn thickness. At that point, since it's already apart, you might as well replace it if there's any wear

Without knowing how the PO drove the car, you can't really get a fair assessment. A clutch replacement is somewhere in the neighborhood of $1500-2K, subject to what parts you go with.

I replaced mine at 60K. IMO that's not too bad for clutch wear on this car. The clutch feel isn't particularly good as stated.

Okay, I just have one more question. Are there any recommended aftermarket clutches you guys prefer? You guys have been a great help and were very quick to respond. I think I will like this forum!

are you referring to the clutch or master cylinder/slave cylinder failing causing the clutch pedal not to rise once depressed? Some 2008 cars had these cylinders replaced under warranty when the issue occured. If you are purchasing the car from a dealership ask if this service had been done, if it hasn't negotiate a better price or have it inlcuded in the warranty.

I am actually looking at a privately sold G37 right now. I will ask to see the carfax when I go test drive it. Are there any specific things I should look for that are worn out?

A lot of 08 G37s should be running out of bumper to bumper warranty by now. If one IS out of warranty, see if they had the steering wheel replaced with the 2010+ one. The newer bezel surrounding the buttons is made out of different material that won't scratch off.

If it is under warranty, make sure you get that done before it runs out.

Otherwise you can look into covering it. Some people here have used 3m Di-noc stuff to cover it and results have been good.

I think getting 116k out of a clutch is an exception rather than the norm

Besides, once you see how the engagement of the clutch is, you'll see why. I think it just lends itself to wearing the clutch more.
