‘08 coupe sport 6mt

Hello all! I recently made a thread in the newbie corner but felt it’s time to graduate to the real threads. Back story on me, I’ve mostly been in the Honda world and had 2 s13’s one with an sr and the other with a ka24de 248/248 hot cam swap which was a lot of fun. I’ve missed having a rwd and a Nissan so here I am

I purchased a ‘08 red sport coupe that’s a 6mt. The 2.5 hour drive home brought no issues. The clutch grabs nicely but the other day I noticed it slipping on the highway in 6th gear at about 70mph if I tried to speed up more than normal pace. I feel if I baby it I’ll be good for awhile. Clutch and brake fluid was low so I topped that off.

maintenance done:

2 tires and balance
resurfaced rotors
e brake adjustment
valve cover gaskets & spark plugs gapped to .44 (p0300) fixed ish
new windshield and wipers
buffed and polished (someone repainted it at some point not very well imo)
k&n filters (don’t feel like spending a grip on CAI)
oil/filter change (doesn’t burn any oil) mobile 1 5w30. I might try the 5w40 next time

I mainly want to get it up to par with maintenance so I’ll do coolant, trans and diff fluids. Comments/criticism appreciated!

Hi Vhr_dad, welcome to the forum.

What are your plans to address the driver's seat? You could set up an auto-notify with ebay for whenever one pops up, which isn't that uncommon in black. Or you could network for a local upholstery shop. Figure about $1000 for professional repair.

I'm digging the shift **** with the red accents, but not so much the red boot. Check out Redline Goods for quality leather, aftermarket boots. They also sell a leather wrap for the steering wheel, but wrapping the wheel is kind of a learned skill.

What's the mileage on that old Coupe? Is that CF port available, or is that a cap? I always thought that was a bold choice for Infiniti to have a compact flash reader.

Common old G problems... the clutch slave cylinder, the heater hose connector, the sunroof drain, and I believe the '08 and '09 coupe had a cracking dash issue.

Thank you! Both seats will be redone eventually by a buddy that does upholstery and it’ll only cost me parts and a 6 pack lol the red shift boot and **** was in the car at purchase and no…I don’t dig the boot one bit. It’s very ricer to me so it will be addressed soon. I would eventually like to wrap the silver moldings in maybe a semi gloss black and re do the gear selection sticker. The steering wheel will one day be replaced with something tasteful.

I just hit 150,000 going to get coffee and gas this morning (to fill up a full tank in Cali for me is between $70-$75) honestly I looked at that port thing and tried to get it open for about 10 seconds and couldn’t so I’ll look that up and figure out what that’s for.

Thank you for the common problems part…I’ve been on forums before and I did a bunch of research before I started my hunt. I found all of those common issues thanks to the lovely search button that more people should use haha the css I have no info on if it’s been replaced but betting with my clutch starting to slip some I’m going to be gentle on it. I’ve researched it some but need to do more, heater hose was replaced, sun roof drain will be addressed soon. It did rain pretty good for a couple days and no signs of it being clogged but I’m going to do it anyways soon (this thing is tail happy in the rain The dash is a funny thing to look at haha it’s got lint that is a pain to get off, it’s got no cracks (good ol Nissan and their dashes) but at the sides of the shifter both sides are sticking out a little.

I mainly wanted something that needed some maintenance work and a red 6mt and I got what I wanted. After spark plugs, valve cover gaskets/tube seals I still get an o2 sensor code randomly, usually in town driving. When I was in there I was pressed for time so I still need to clean the throttle bodies and MAF sensors…please don’t flame me for that lol the engine looked very clean inside. Another thing I noticed is I have a code reader nothing fancy but the temp said 500c+. I feel that’s drastic but I have an obd Bluetooth thing coming which will tell me a lot more than my code reader. When it’s cold there are noticeable engine vibrations but runs fine when at operating temp. Ideas? Might try the 10w30 but I doubt it’ll remedy that.

More comments and criticism is welcome! I look forward to contributing to the forums

One more random bit of advice... the G37 responds really, really well to aftermarket swaybars, any brand. There's no added NVH, body roll is significantly reduced, and any understeering you're experiencing will be a thing of the past. As far as oversteering in the rain... well, . RWD, limited slip, and gobs of horsepower.

Looking forward to reading what you do with this Coupe. I don't recall if there were any first-year gremlins with the VQ37HR. It's a pretty solid platform.

So I’m starting to research clutch options. I’m not one that’s going to want to push a bunch of power, FBO for sure so I don’t need some crazy clutch setup. Never going to boost this thing. I’m looking at OEM spec kits, would a stage 1 make a more fun driver’s experience? I’ve always had stock clutch setups in my past cars and I don’t want something that’s a pain in the *** to daily or that I just plain and simply don’t need. I’ve done research in the different css options and I’m liking the Z1 product as it’s direct bolt on but I would like people who have had experience with any aftermarket products to chime in with their opinions. How long have you had it installed? Any issues, pedal feeling/engagement?

You say you don’t want boost now…. But you will 😤. But don’t do it. If you really want to be fast just turbo’ing won’t be enough… ask me how I know 😅

lol no boost for me. This is plenty quick enough for me. I was thinking of replacing the ect being that it has vibrations when cold. I heard that a bad sensor could be the cause. Anyone experiencing the same thing? Eventually I’ll get gauges to keep a closer eye on things

So I’m thinking of going with this clutch kit from JWT mainly for daily driving purposes. Has anybody used a flywheel like this…

I called conceptzperformance and talked to a rep and this is the clutch I’ll be going with as well as an upgraded csc. I’ll also do the rear main seal. I’ll be buying this in the next couple weeks and my old shop will be installing it as my clutch is slipping pretty bad. It’ll be nice to start fresh with a new clutch system. I’ve seen some companies say it’s mandatory to replace the master cylinder as well, is this a have to do item? I’ve read that the old one can contaminate the new fluid

So upon further research (I love to do my reach and reading or talking to people) I’m going with the JWT clutch with a nodular flywheel from cpz mostly for daily driving purposes. Their flywheel weight comes in at 26lbs according to them which is lighter than stock at 32lbs iirc but not “light” In my eyes so I’m not hoping or expecting any crazy setup. I’ll also be going with a css from JIT also on cpz

Driving over this last weekend my son was sitting in the back and asked “why is it wet back here?” I’ve found that my back carpet was wet along with the from passenger so I’ll be hopefully remedying that issue Thursday no major puddles which is nice because it rained really good

The engine still vibrates, more vibrations when it’s cold. I parked it on a flat surface and will check the oil again. It didn’t burn anything within the first couple thousand miles so I thought I was good. I’ll report back what I find. I’m also going to touch all the coilpacks and see if any of them give me any insight and also use a long screwdriver to listen for anything abnormal. I’m hoping I’ll find nothing. I was curious about if my engine/trans mounts were bad. I’ve got a trans mount and clutch master cylinder coming from rock auto and will order the JWT clutch mid January along with the JIT css

It’s that time! I have the z1 clutch and pressure plate, iron flywheel weighing in at 27lbs (I don’t want the chatter) JIT CSS and a new transmission mount that I forgot to put in the picture. In the next few months I’ll get rid of the ugly red shift boot, install a short shifter and a new shift ****

New clutch & flywheel, and a short shifter. The only thing missing from that list is the RJM clutch pedal assembly. The price is right, the product is darn near perfect, and the install is (probably) DIY. All those components together, and your driving experience will be next-level compared to stock.

I’ve read up on the RJM product and it sounds like it is worth getting. I live in northern Cali as of now and moving to Texas close to Dallas this summer so I’m saving money for the move/life right now but that will be coming after I get settled. The clutch was an unexpected repair that I had to do …in my defense I’ve driven manual cars for the last 17 years and only had the car for 3-4 months before it started slipping so who knows how it was treated before me. I’m very curious to see what the current setup looks like after it’s taken apart. The new flywheel is a single mass vs the dual mass from factory so hopefully there will be no installation issues there (z1 said there wouldn’t be)

i forgot to mention that I also purchased a rear main seal and new flywheel bolts (red bag in picture) I heard some people say I could reuse the bolts and others said don’t do it. They’re cheap so I figured why not. All of this will be going in tomorrow so I’ll be back with an update within a few days.

i hope everybody had a good holiday season and the new year is treating them good

CZP Clutch Kit

I also purchased a Upgraded Clutch/Flywheel kit from CZP back in 2019 when my CSC went out. I replaced the clutch, flywheel, clutch line with stainless steel, heavy duty CSC, master cylinder (usually on it's way out if the CSC fails), and rear main seal. I've been happy with it ever since, though with my flywheel being the lightest option that was available (17lbs) I think, there is a considerable amount of chatter heard at idle after the car has warmed up. I will say, out of all the mods I've done so far, the lighter flywheel was the most noticeable difference for me in how much quicker the car revved. In any case, congratulations on the purchase and I hope your G treats you well. On a side note, I find it a bit odd that the front bumper on yours is from the non-sport models of that year, do you know if the previous owner replaced it?

I actually went with Z1’s street performance clutch and pressure plate, an iron flywheel (27LBS) for noise and comfort since it’s my daily, JIT CSC, a new trans mount, rear main seal and new flywheel bolts. I didn’t go with CZP just because when I asked the rep if it would handle full bolt ons, he said it should… no this won’t be boosted or anything crazy but down the road I want CAI, headers and full exhaust and eventually a cam. The Z1 setup is rated for 500TQ which I’ll never get close to but I wanted that extra safety net for when I decide to add performance mods. I put K&N drop in filters in it but I don’t really count that as a performance mod. I didn’t do the line or the master cylinder but if it goes out I’ll get it done.

I’m pretty much done with the break in period and I can say that at first the clutch pedal was much stiffer than stock but after breaking it in it’s softened up to where I hardly notice it. I notice the bite it’s got more than anything haha the way I would describe it is if you’re learning or not familiar with a MT don’t do it. If you know what you’re doing then it’s very streetable. My 9 year old son says it feels like the car just wants to go I’m very happy with the new setup and before summer I’ll have a short throw shifter installed which I’m very excited for.

The g was in an accident (frame is straight) and the previous owner said it was hit by the owner before him. I assumed it was either the cheaper option or it was what was available. I honestly like it better than the sport front bumper, flame all you want lol but life this summer will be having big changes so down the road I’ll get an IPL front bumper, coilovers and wheels, new headlights, bodywork, paint then maybe a wrap. I’ve seen a few yellow g’s and if it’s the right shade with the right wheel/stance it looks good IMO
