Dredging this thread back to the top.
I've since managed to outfit the car with 4.08 gears. It took some work, and we learned a lot. Read about it here, if you want to do the same.
I'm loving the response with the gears, and there is still PLENTY of loading to spool it up properly. Midrange is wonderful.
I'm .14" from a ten second pass and this just might be the ticket. No guarantees, though.
I'd love to get the crew at The Shop to go for an Atco track rental. I perform SO much better when I have calm advice instructing me from observing. We'll see.
Car is still running strong. I don't abuse it and I don't drive it enough. It's been a record year for high heat, so any track day plans have to wait until temps drop into the seventies or less. I'm away on a family vacation for ten days. Maybe Sep?
Thanks. Just a public service announcement.

^^^ No.THAT Sunday is the day of my vibrant 95-yr-old Great Grandfather-in-law's Classic Car show named in his honor. (The Alden Sherman Classic)
It would be blasphemy to not represent. He is an icon in the CLassic's world, and an icon in our family.
That happened last year, too. Otherwise I would be there.
I expect to post a time card soon enough. Right now I'm posting from the FL Keys, on vacation.

Thanks.

Oh yes, I remember reading that event last year. I wouldn't miss that either. Well maybe i could take your spot at the shootout and when you can make it then it'll be yours... lol. Good luck and enjoy your vacation.
I'm back from a well-deserved vacation. My builder (JimmyK from TheShopCT.com) took his street GTR to the track while I was away:
Looks easy, right? Wow. He wants to go back this week. 8.7's are in his future. Me? I'd like to join in the fun, now that I'm wearing 4.08 gears....
We'll see.

Anything can be made. The Driveshaft Shop can make anything we need. The question is: will it NEED them? I'm wishing not. This is one of the benefits of the auto; it leaves with little shock to the driveline.
Still, that's a LOT of torque to deliver, and these cars aren't light.
I've encountered disappointments and weak links before.

I just spent an hour reading threads on my350z and this forum. Fortunately, for me, EVERY instance of a broken axle was a manual transmission and dropping the clutch or wheel hop.
Not one instance did I find of an auto trans breaking the axle(s). In one post a Driveshaft Shop axle and an OEM axle were both on the car, and the DSS axle spun. OEM = FTW! LOL!
Anyway, I was curious for data. So far, I am a data point.

(I'm copying this post from the 'media share' forum of my latest trials. Not great news: I went to Atco dragway three nights go to attempt to better my 11.1 pass. I didn't go quicker than 11.7 but I did four passes in the elevens. So I packed it in and started my three hour drive home. I noticed a slight 'ticking' on the return road....)
It got worse. An hour after my post above, the engine seized. BIG noises below.
I ran this thing WAY over redline more than once, and it didn't like this. Sigh.
I ran four passes all in the elevens, none of the MPH were above 120. Boost peaked no more than 15.6lbs (peak hold on a zero guage), even though I tried raising it. It was doing the boost or fuel cut thing every pass. Dropping power, then coming back on. Still I can't figure this out.
4.08 Gears, although a blast on the road, did not show me the improvement I hoped. Best 60' time: 1.79".
Got home at 3am after an ex$pensive tow back home. NOT a good outing.
But, this is what I chose to do. These things happen. Jimmy fired it up at The Shop at 7am to see, and he said: "It's toast."
Next phase: OEM engine and trans from good salvage wreck. Convert the car back to OEM stock, and sell a gaggle of quality hi-perf components separately.
Clint Eastwood: "A man's got to know his limitations."
I tried, but the 11.13 passes, which were real and have set the standard to beat, yet I'm passing on any further attempts.
More news as I go on. Thanks for your support!

Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure... than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.

This has been a hard weekend, emotionally. Truth is, the car was running SO well and SO smooth, that it's a damn shame I tried chasing my tail for that elusive ten-second time card. I didn't need that, I wanted that. Human nature: Always wanting more.
LOL! All or nothing... = Nothing. This outing.
I reviewed my in car vids, and I was WELL over the 7500 redline often. I have no one to fault.
One thing I've learned on these street drag nights is clear: If you want a consistent ten-second car with a moderate amount of modifications, going American Muscle V8's will get you there. Mustangs, Camaros, Challengers all make the grade. Nothing is impervious, but Subaru's and Infiniti's smaller motors aren't in this league. GTR's can do this easily, but they are costly.
Don't fit a square peg in a round hole. However, it's great to see how strong the VHR motors can be, yet they have a breaking point when REALLY pressed.
Anyway, I'm down but not completely out. I'll keep you posted. Of course I'll disassemble the engine, however, the cost of a teardown, rebuild, replacement, stock pistons, gaskets, labor, etc will EASILY equal what a low mileage, untouched, dependable salvage engine will cost. I may have some good parts in there to sell. We'll see.
