Hi all!

I had horrible steering wheel shakes on my '09 X and since it was previously a Midwest car, the rotors were badly rusted.

No problem - replaced rotors and pads, flushed the fluid, properly bedded the pads, and was on my way.

I commute daily on an 80mph highway and slow passers love jumping out at me - especially trucks on hills. And the shudder at high speeds is still there - only in my steering wheel.

It's bad around 80 and calms down at 65. I rotated the tires - which will need replacing soon, but don't think that's related.

What's next? If not the rotors and pads, what can be causing the steering wheel shake?

I would love to solve this before the snow flies. Thanks all!

 

Rotating the tires could be related, if a problem wheel/tire is now in front it would enhance the steering vibration vs. being in the rear. If the vibration is occurring without pressing on the brakes then it's almost surely a tire/wheel issue, or could even be driveshaft related. If it is when the brakes are pressed you may have uneven pad deposits. Try scrubbing the rotors w/ several high speed braking trials~Go from 60 down to 10 w/ steady hard braking, and do about 4 cycles, never going to a full stop until you've driven a while to cool the rotors down. Then take it out again and see if you have that judder, if it's gone or has gotten better then you know where the problem lies.

 

If it judder only when you apply the brakes, then the brake rotors are the problem.
Get them resurfaced ON THE CAR!!! not on some brake lathe machine.
I had the same problem for about 2 years. I replaced 3 sets of rotors and the problem was still there. In my case, the juddering was there only when the brakes were hot.
After resurfacing the brake rotors using a on car brake lathe, the juddering was gone.
Is more than a year since i resurfaced the rotors and is ok. No more juddering since then.

 

Where do you get this done? No one seems to have an ON car lathe. Would Infiniti do this?
