Car shakes and I've done just about everything..

Hey guys 2011 coupe with 88k on it. Over the past 6 months I've had an increasing amount of shaking (of the steering wheel) at speeds of 55.

Got new tires and has them balanced of course. Fixed the problem slightly. Had an alignment done today and that helped a lot as well. I'm still experiencing a lot of shaking at highway speeds. Doesn't matter if I'm on the brake or not. Car drives straight as an arrow and I'm not in an area with bumpy roads. Any clue as to what could be causing this?

Could be a wheel bearing, a defective tire, driveshaft got dinged (to cause a slight off balance issue), or just needs a better balance job. Did you use a shop w/ a Hunter Road Force balance machine, those are the gold standard.

Same issue with my 2013 xS coupe. I tried the same things you did (new tires and alignment). I finally got it serviced under warranty and it turned out to be a problem with the rear propeller shaft that they fixed by reinstalling it. They also serviced the AWD system (something was wrong with it apparently -- what specifically they didn't say).

It corrected the problem about 50% I'd say. I'll probably take it back soon to have them take another look. It was an expensive repair, would have paid about $900 if it weren't warrantied.

Rear propeller shaft aka drive shaft for us common folk.

I think there's a TSB that recommends disconnecting the propeller shaft from the differential flange, rotating it 90 degrees, and reattaching it.

I'm not sure I did this at a local Midas since the dealer is closed for the holiday weekend and couldn't get me in. Shop checked entires suspension and they love to make up problems to get money out of people I'm sure if they saw something more they would tell me, I hope lol.

I'm going to bring it to the dealer next week I'm still under warranty but they are easy to say "nothing's wrong the cars old"

Do you have more information on the TSB? I'd like to bring to the SA attention when I drop it off.

Another question - could it be my rotors or pads? I know they are pretty sh*tty.

You said it was shaking without applying the brakes, so unless the shaking gets worse when braking that shouldn't be the culprit.

Spent a year working in a driveshaft shop. Can't tell you how many customers came in with 2 pc driveshafts that had been mated incorrectly following some service. They are balanced together as a unit and if they are taken apart and not reinstalled with the same phase (or clocking) vibrations can occur.

Seems like this is the problem. What would cause this to happen?

If you had any service done to the vehicle that required them to drop the driveshaft, they may have separated the front and rear section, and then mated them back together incorrectly. I haven't yet looked at the g37 driveshaft, but generally speaking driveshaft halves can usually only be mated in one of two ways. You could always separate them, rotate one half 180 degree, reassemble everything and see how it drives.

Of course this is all conjecture. If you think this is the problem, and you aren't comfortable pulling it apart yourself, it would be worth it to go to a specialist.

(edit) I reread the original post and I somehow missed the steering wheel part. Driveshaft vibration tends to be a more seat of the pants feel than a steering wheel feel. Does the vibration happen at all speeds? Is it constant? Can you feel it when you are idling?

I would be going to the dealer or a Indy shop. I actually feel the vibration more in the seat and floor versus the steering wheel. But to be clear the steering wheel does not physically shake. It only vibrates like the car does when this issue occurs. This happens only at speed above 55

Sounds like a driveshaft issue. Does the vibration go away if you go above a certain speed?

Doesn't get better at higher speeds it's just constant.

Was there anything done to the car right before you noticed the vibration, especially like Crazyirish said, regarding driveshaft removal? Good post BTW, Irish!

Nothing was done to my car as far as maintenance goes, this problem progressively got worse over time. Only thing is I had my rear bumper and some body panels painted and replace due to some rear end damage (nothing that would have messed up drive shaft).
