Don't rely on anyone but yourself. Most vendors are middlemen and have little technical idea of what they're selling. As mentioned, perform your research so you know exactly what you're getting and what should fit.

Wheels are a funny business to be in. There so many layers to fitment. Fitment aside, there's the issue of safe handling. For example, wheels that stick out too much put uneven load on the hub. Resulting in premature hub bear wear. Some don't care about this as they're in it strictly for the looks.

According to michelin, the pilot super sport in 245/40/19 will fit a rim of 8-9.5". Their printed tire specs (diameter, revs per mile, etc..) are based on a rim width of 8.5". I would of looked up your specific tire, but you didn't specify an exact toyo proxy model.

 

I think he may have left that part out to simplify it as well. That was my best assumption, at least. I ended up with the TSW Bathurst actually. The more i looked into the actual weight, the more I felt I wasn't going to get anywhere near what was advertised.

if you notice the email he sent back was not what i was asking for..he could have just said i don't have Matte black in 18x8.5 +35 in stock.
instead he quotes me a 18x8.5 +30 in silver

 

Assuming both clear the calipers, realistically speaking, how much difference is there in a +30 vs +35mm offset? Numerically it's 5mm, but does that translate into a significant visual difference?

well for one they didn't have the matte black i was looking for.
and if i wanted a +30 offset i would have asked for it..
the point of the story is i asked for a specific wheel and offset and he tries to sell me something i didn't want or ask for.

 

The marks will be on the outer part of the barrel from mounting the tires (the part of the wheel covered currently by the tires). The marks will almost certainly be there. This is just a fact of life when mounting tires.

 

No offense (just rationalizing), but I didn't see anything too bad about his e-mail. He's a sales guy trying to make a sale and went out of his way to let you know your other options. Sometimes people are flexible on wheel color and what's in stock sways them one way or another. I know this happened when I ordered my wheels. It was nice to know my options.

I understand that. Especially the color part. You're really interested in a black car but get sold a white one instead.

My question was more so about the significance of 5mm offset (1/4"). That is, just how important is that in the scheme of things so long as the brakes clear.

 

I looked over the two wheels that were actually opened and played around with. There's not a single mark on them; no scratches, smudges, abrasions, gouges, etc. Although the "tire specialists" did mention they could get the tire back off without damage.

I, also, was very surprised at this. But they're flawless.

 

Well it could make the difference between a setup that fits fine and one that pokes 5mm, or one that hits the inner fender edge, etc.

Sounds like you were dealing w/ some very conscientious workers, glad to hear they're clean. I've not been so lucky when dealing w/ most tire shops

 

I really don't want to be the rain on the parade, but once all 4 tires are completely off, you will see what I'm talking about. Until then, I'll be hoping for the best.
