TPMS Dealer Reset Required?

Had my first service today on my new 08 G37 Journey.

The service writer offered to sell me a "Nitrogen Upgrade" for my tires, he said I needed it because if my tire pressure drops a couple of pounds in the winter time and the TPMS light trips, I'll have to go to the dealer service department to have it reset for a fee of $78. The Nitrogen is $10 per tire.

I smell something fishy.

I had a Maxima, and if the light came on, you check and added air, and the light would go off with a couple of cycles of driving and stopping.

Are they pulling my leg? Have we advanced so far in technology that a low tire requires a dealer visit and $78 service?

New TPMS sensors (if you're buying a new set or replacing a damaged one) must be initialized at the dealer, oe ones dont need initializing if the pressure drops. It's a sales pitch that's not based on fact. Paying extra for nitrogen fill, on the other hand, isn't worth it. Works well in race apps where temps and pressures change a lot. On street driven cars not so much. Also, if it loses nitrogen there aren't many places to fill up. Then you end up mixing air at the gas station or oil change place and negates the reason you used nitrogen.

Do no need the "upgrade" or the reset. Many of us have aftermarket tires+wheels with OEM TPMS without any reset.

"Nitrogen upgrade" wow be careful with the dealership if they want to rip you off with that line. Who knows what other crap they are going to try to pull on you. My G came with nitrogen for free on my tires but I had a flat on one of them so there goes the nitrogen LOL.

Thanks everyone for the reply.

It's a shame the dealer service writer started out with a new customer that way. Now I wonder if he even put in clean oil or changed the filter.

Anything for a buck.
