As the title says. My handbrake was loose today and it's a pretty easy fix but how often does it need to be adjusted?

The handbrake barely held the car when I got it about 6 years ago. I wanna say I adjust it every other year or so. Is that normal? Rotors were replaced about a year ago and I adjusted it then, so maybe it's still wearing in? I'm a little worried that the cable is stretching and will eventually snap. I park my car in gear anyways so it's not the biggest deal but ideally you'd want the brakes to hold the car, not the drivetrain. Anyone have any input?
