Checking upper and lower ball joints

Ive seen differing opinions on how to check the ball joints on our cars. Even the factory service manual received an update on how to do it.

So, what is the CORRECT way to check for play in the upper and lower ball joints (mostly for the lower since it seems uppers dont really do much)?

Should I jack up the car under the control arm then rock the wheel in/out with hands at 12 and 3?

Should I just lift the car until the wheels are off the ground and do the same?

Or should I lift the car off the ground and try to push from under the tire up and down?

Infiniti released a TSB last year that makes it sound like the 3rd option is correct, but it was for such a wide array of vehicles I wondered if there was a better way specifically for the G.

Thanks.
