Was told last oil change I did at Nissan that I need rear brakes done and would be $255. Set a Saturday appt, dropped it off and signed the ok for $255 of work and agreed to the extra half hour it would take for them to get the parts delivered. Get a phone call an hour later that it was going to be $500 and they couldn't get parts til Tuesday. So pick up my car the service managers saying he is sorry but due to my car being the "top of the line" Infiniti (sport) I have rotors that can't be resurfaced and just have to be replaced. I do know the S has bigger brakes but when I told him it was quoted $300 to do it the Infiniti he said to make sure I check with them bc I would run into the same thing. He did also say they would be ordering the parts from the same Infiniti dealership which I have put a call to but would like to be informed by folks here that probably have the skill set to change their own brakes. So am I just being overpriced bc I'm a woman they believe doesn't even realize she bought a sport model? I know the sport model has bigger brakes but does that mean the rotors have to be replaced with the pads seems excessive. Either way they couldn't even have the parts til Tuesday. I have an appointment for Sat the 20th with Infiniti but don't wanna just hear the same thing 2 weeks later. I was always so bad at car maintenance so the fact I was even there ready to drop 250 on brakes that are just lightly squealing was amazing but now I'm not ready to drop 500 before finding out if I'm being conned..

 

Have you considered getting an second opinion and exploring other options besides the dealer for doing the brake job?

 

Yes I did explore other options but the cost comparison was just not worth it to me as i want to know the correct parts are used and that I'm not saving a few bucks and getting some cheaper version that may need replacing sooner. Also many of the places claiming cheaper brake jobs I read the reviews for and prefer to avoid.
However no matter where i end up at I would still like the actual question answered, is there some reason the sport models rotors can't be resurfaced?

 

Provided the rotors aren't below the minimum thickness, there is no reason they can't be resurfaced.

 

Get a second opinion at an Infiniti dealer



My local Infiniti dealer in NJ charges $279.00 and when I had brakes done on my previous 06 G35 at 86k miles 6 speed they turned the rotors on all four wheels.

You can resurface them, I had mine resurfaced. They are trying to rip you off because the labor is exactly the same even with the big brake kit. For $500 you can buy an entirely new set of rotors and good pads and have it installed. Honestly, I would just take it to nissan and have them do it for half the price. They charged me $100 for just fronts, so $200 for all 4 + Tax and other bs.

 

My experience aligns with Lego Maniac's comment, which is why I think a second opinion could help.

had mine resurfaced when i bought the car and they vibrated until I replaced them with nice centric rotors. resurfacing might work, but the rotors are not that expensive even for sport to not replace them.

 

i would just replace like above said its not that expensive. id rather have all new parts

 

Depending on how many miles are on the rotors, there is a point where they cannot be resurfaced.

For example I have 70k on the car, and I believe I am still on the original factory pads and rotors. I am the second owner and have put 30k on her since I bought her. The rotors are too worn to be resurfaced and it is time for them to be replaced.

 

The S brakes do cost more than the regular non S.. I believe it's $100 extra an axle? Get a 2nd opinion on whether or not they can just re-surface. They might just be hosing you into buying rotors you may not need.

 

Same here.. when I've had rotors re-surfaced due to "judder" it goes away, but comes back again much sooner than if new rotors. My experience with all makes and models of cars over 25 yrs of driving.

 

The labor is exactly the same for both calipers. Remove wheel, remove caliper, remove rotor, reset piston, reinstall rotor, replace pads, put wheel back. The general gist of it.

 

Unless they think taking out guide pins adds more time it shouldn't

 

Lol the Sport pads are the easiest to change assuming you don't need new rotors. Remove the wheel, remove the two guide pins, remove the old pads, slide in new pads, reinstall the guide pins, bolt on the wheel. Easiest brakes I've ever done.
