I figured I'd get grief over that... Lol
I have a spring compressor at home. It just isn't necessary for these struts. It literally popped an inch once it let go. It wasn't flying anywhere. And it took 1/10th the time.
But, as always, do whatever you're comfortable with...

You do need the top hats for the coilovers as they do not come with top hats. I know the springs are different on the AWD, but you definitely need a spring compressor for the G37S in the front.
I have D2's. My D2's have their own top hats so that's where the confusion was. I was just referring to my own install experience. My bad. Didn't know they were different.

I hear you. I just didn't want some kid who doesn't know any better to read your post and take his head off. Because I saw a spring fly through a door using your trick, I have always used a spring compressor. It does not take much compression to equal a lot of force.

Oh yeah, most coilovers will have their own top hat. That makes sense now if you have different coilovers. You made it sound like you had the Tein Basis.

I saw they have a good deal on them for Black Friday similar to when I got them. I think you will like them. Let us know when you have questions.

If you have the right tools and have done a suspension before, the Tein Basis are a breeze to install. Probably the easiest suspension I have ever done. I was pleasantly surprised.

Yeah, the install is really straight forward.
The only doozie was the one large nut (19mm, I think?) on the front suspension bracket. Needed a 24" long 1/2" breaker bar with my jack handle as a 4 foot cheater bar. It just didn't want to give.
I've gone back a few times to change the suspension around since and it was never as hard as that first time, even when properly torqued down. You might want to PB Blaster the f*** out of it the night before...

Did you have air tools? I used PB Blaster on everything right before I started and everything came loose ok.

Not at the time. I do now. But since most people don't, I thought it was worth mentioning. Also, it was a CA car with 25k miles, so it's not like it was corroded.

Did you use a backer wrench on the nut behind that 19mm bolt? I forget what size it was, I used an SAE size that was close IIRC and w/ the nut backed up it popped free easy w/ a 2 ft breaker bar (w/ PB Blast sprayed on the night before.)

Gotcha. I imagine that could suck without air tools

UPDATE: Raised the front and rear about 1/4" which compressed the spring and they ride noticeably better over "bouncy" roads.
