Help - rear suspension failure

My daughters G37S coupe's rear suspension failed, causing the struts to contact the tires on both sides wearing out the inside sidewall and inside tread. Has anybody else seen this happen. I've looked at the rear suspension and see no way this could happen short of the bracket connecting the strut to the suspension breaking on both sides which didn't happen as the mechanic only replaced the struts.

Do you have any pics prior to the new ones being installed?
BTW, welcome to the site!

This happened after having the rear shocks replaced? Is the suspension lowered? Are the springs installed correctly?

Pictures of the damage and components would be great. This is obviously something not normal, maybe if you are jumping speedbumps and curves etc.

Problem solved, got bad info from daughter, talked with mechanic. Left strut was bad, car out of alignment. Replaced both struts/shocks and two tires. Thanks for your interest and responses.

That sounds better
Be sure to check in whenever any issues may arise, there's someone around here that's been there done that.
Hopefully your daughter has been enjoying that car.

curious. how could you tell that the strut had gone bad? I recently went into the dealership for an oil change and was told that my passenger front was at 0/32" however my driver front still had 2/32" and needed new tires. Went to my tire guy and got new tires while getting the tires mounted tires and the car was in the air did a quick look at all 4 corners and there was no visible leaking of any of the struts. after the new tires were put on i went and got an alignment (big-0 had a great deal on 3-year alignment program) of which apparently only my driver side front was a bit out of spec.

i thought it was weird that only my passenger side was excessively worn however it did not seem as though cupping was occurring it was pretty evenly worn on the inside all the way around. I know that the OEM set up for the car has a bit of negative camber but this seemed odd as it was only on the passenger side.

Thoughts?

Oh ya car is an 09 S coupe with about 56k miles stock suspension. front tires were 225/45/19 hankook v12 evo k110s with about 30k miles on them when i changed them.

Did you get an alignment anytime prior to noticing the severely worn tire?
You might have jarred the alignment out by hitting a pothole.

Sorry The B i don't mean to hijack your thread. I can create a new thread if necessary.

No blnewt, i didn't get an alignment prior to noticing the worn tire as after it was noticed i just went and got new tires however if it was out of alignment shouldn't it have shown up during my alignment after I getting the new tires? The last time i got an alignment was about 6 months ago when i had to replace my rears.

Thanks for the help

Sorry, glossed over the part about your alignment being checked w/ the new tires, did you get a printout of your alignment specs?

Well you can cross the alignment off the list, looks great
And w/ the OEM parts only the toe is adjustable in front
30k life out of summer tires is pretty rare, some tires really accelerate their wear when they get to a certain point. It's possible your tires were due for replacement quite a bit earlier than when you replaced them.
Did you rotate side to side (since they were staggered), this should help to even out that wear. Also do you notice any pull to one side either when braking or coasting?
