39k miles...brakes

39k miles and it's time for brake pads on my 2010 G37x sedan. Interestingly, the rears have worn considerably more than the fronts but the tech says that it's normal on these cars for the rears to wear faster. The dealership says I may have 3-5k miles left on the rears at most.

I asked the service writer about ceramic and he said ceramic pads are noisier and create a lot of dust. He recommended the OEM pads. I've heard the opposite is true. I really don't want to get bent over at the dealership.

If ceramic pads provide as good or better braking, same or less dust, and same or less noise...then what ceramic pads should I buy? Are there decent pads sold at AutoZone or Advance? Or should I order from Tirerack? Or are the "lifetime warranty" brake jobs from Midas, etc worthwhile?

thanks

My xS sedan needs rears too at 46k. Just bought Centric rotors and Akebono Pro-Act ceramic pads from Tire Rack. The Pro-Act are the same as the OE ones, from what I've read.

Advance also sells the Akebono pads, and will match prices from what I've heard in-store.

I have Hawk Ceramic pads. No noise whatsoever. Zero. No squeak, groans, or squeals. Very little dust. None in the rear, far less than the original OEM pads in front. I have no complaints with them whatsoever. They have lasted a long time as well. I don't remember the actual mileage (maybe 45K?), but they have lasted me longer than the OEMs did.

Question about the Akebono Sport brakes... how many miles can I expect to get out of them before I need to change the pads?

My previous G ('04) had brake issues and they changed them for me twice for free. They lasted 20k miles each time. The Akebono have already done better (23k+ so far), just wondering when I may need new ones.

Personally, i'm at 68k and still using the original pads on my Sport. I'll be chaning them in about two weeks though lol

its hard to justify break use by mileage

I drive 500 miles every week just for work. There is only one stop light the entire way and the rest is 70 MPH high way with very light to no traffic.

My car is at 36k and the pads have tons of life left

I have 26k on mine and was told I need to change rear pads. Its a Weekend car and mostly highway usage. I get if you drive the car hard and brake lot I can understand pads needs to be replaced prematurely... maybe dealer wants my $. Previously they said I need a engine flush cause my oil is really black.

I probably will go with what bb suggested if I don't upgrade to akebono bbk soon. Just need to verify if it fits on my OEM 18s. Dealer told me I need spacer but base on pass history and BS, can't trust them.

if you have the older 18s (07-08 split 7 spokes), then you need spacers to clear BBK. If you have the newer 18s (09-current), then they will clear.

Yeah, I understand that, just looking for a guesstimate. I drive mostly city, and I drive her a little fast.

Based on my driving, if I get 30-35k I'll be cool with that. My wife got damn near 60k on her old Accord. THAT was nice.
