Question screwed up smoking taillights. how can I correct this?

Hey guys,

Long story short, I smoked my tail lights today with VHT night shades and I think that either I went a little too close/heavy on one light, or the light wasnt 100% dry before i sprayed. I attached a couple of pics so please let me know if anyone has any experience with correcting paint. Im very meticulous and cant have this crap!

Thanks!

You'll need to sand it back down (600, 1200, 2500 grit progression) , or try lacquer thinner and see if you can still remove the paint.Then use isopropyl alcohol prior to re-painting. I keep the nozzle about a foot away and start with the outside edges then fill in the middle w/ about a 6" back & forth spray. From your pics it looks like the paint was reacting to unsanitary prep work or too slow w/ your spray path. Be sure to do a light sand w/ 2000 or 2500 grit after the Nightshades dries then shoot an industrial quality clearcoat like Dupont Acrylic Clear A-7480s, Evercoat Cut-in-Clear, or Spraymax 2k cut-in-clear. Give the clearcoat a couple days to set (you can install the lights and drive w/ the clearcoat setting up). After a couple days sand the orangepeel w/ 2000 and a final 2500 grit sand then followed w/ a final hand or power buff w/ Maguairs Ultimate compound or something similar followed by some carnauba wax. This will leave your lights factory smooth, actually much smoother than the factory

Good luck, that Niteshades usually goes on pretty well (as does most of the VHT paints)
Hope it turns out well for you the second time around.

i've done this before. What happened there is you spray too close to the taillights, and too heavy coat.

You need to get some sand papers, in incremental grit size, 400 -> 600 -> 800 -> 1000 -> 1200.

Then sand them down from the lowest number to highest. Afterward, it will be silky smooth. Now you are ready to respray the VHT tint. This time, spray lighter coat and move the spray nozzle further away from the tails.

if you would like to re-do it, laquer thinner removes it really easily

dont use acetone. sanding is the proper route to take. start with a course grit and work your way to fine until it's like glass. clean it with denatured alcohol and then spray light coats of VHT until you get your desired shade. GL!

I would not use goof off unless your want your tail lights to look like a Salvador Dali painting. That will for sure melt the plastic.
