Hey guys,
I'm trying to install a backup camera and I can't figure out which wire going to the reverse lights is the 12V power lead. The camera has a wire going from its power box that I need to connect to the 12V lead and one wire that is the ground that I plan to just attach to the metal chassis with a screw.

Also, I noticed in my trunk lid that there is a 2 pronged harness that isn't attached to anything, but it looks like it may be the wire that would go to a stock backup camera. I am wondering if I can just tap into that instead of tapping into the reverse lights. The reverse lights have a harness coming from the bottom of the trunk and a harness that connects with another harness going into the light. There are more wires in the harness plugging into the light harness than wires going to the lights. I am a bit confused (see attached for picture of the harness...you can only see the part with wires coming out towards the light, but not the wires going into the harness).

you can easily use a 12V test light to find which wire is the reverse light.

 

I just didn't want to strip each wire. Also, I don't have a test light or multimeter (I realize these are probably useful to have, but I don't get to do a project like this very often). I was just hoping someone knows off-hand the color wire I need to tap into since several have done this before.

 

You don't need to strip each wire. Most test lights have a sharp point, you just stick it into the wire casing.

Test lights cost about $5....go get one.
