New owner question about light in overhead panel

Picked up our '08 this week. In the overhead panel their is very small white light. Checked the manual and see no mention. What is its function?

It's ambient lighting that shines down on the center console.

Saw a 325 some years ago that had the same type of ambient light but it was red like the instrument cluster and it came out from underneath the rear view mirror.

My mom and dad both have a 3 series. Both have that red light you're talking about but neither light up. It's odd, it really is.
I believe it's referred to the "clown nose" and blinks if you have an alarm. It really blows my mind how the alarm isn't a standard feature for a bmw. BLOWS MY MIND.

I believe that BMW started "mood lighting" with the e39.

BMW carried it over to the Mini Cooper. Lots of OEM mood lighting in the Mini.
