To the OP, you can either Tint or Paint them, both will cheapen the look on your car in my opinion that is but that's not the point
Just make sure it doesn't block visibility

Some people also forget another good reason to tint your tail lights is so you can easily undo it later if you decide (i.e. selling the car).
I do agree it looks a bit cheap when up close, but I think it looks good from a distance. Sticks out from everyone else.

I don't know how everyone says it cheapens the look of the car, when done right (painted) it looks great.
I guess it depends on the color of the car how it would look, like on a white/red car I don't think it looks as good but on the dark color cars black/blue slate I think they look great blacked out...
I agree with the person who said "to red" they look terrible being that shade of red on a dark color car
