I thought I understood the limitations for my 2011 G37x Sedan (Non-Nav). I read the following:

500 folders max
5000 songs max

I purchased a 32GB Sandisk flash drive and loaded 4200 songs across 240 folders. Only 1 folder deep each time. However, the car only showed the first 146 folders for a total of 2540 songs (size of about 18GB).

In order to identify whether it was a limitation of # files, size or # of folders, I rearranged and grouped some songs in the same folders. This time, it loaded 149 folders for a total of 2576 songs (size of about 17GB). I also noticed that the order of the folders is strange, almost like the order that they were copied has some effect...

Does anyone have any clarity around the limitations and "intelligence" of the sorting so I can MAXIMIZE the library?

I think you missed a point from the manual.



Since yours is non-nav, I'd expect the second set of limits to apply. Where does the system show total number of folders/song? I don't recall seeing that (not that I ever looked for it)¿?

You're absolutely right, that is what it says in the manual, but for some reason my car is displaying more songs...

I manually added all the file totals from each folder and came to a final number of 2349 files on 149 folders. I'll do more tests sometime and will report back.

I've attached photos showing how I'm calculating. I'm looking at (bottom right of each photo).

 

Does this work well for the 2011 non-nav system? I can't find anything in the manual for "apple" or "iPod". Are there any recommended devices or iOS versions to be fully compatible? I don't have one to test with. I assume they plug right in via USB and are controllable from the console or steering controls? Any tips?

Just buy an iPod

 

Yeah, I was able to borrow an iPod to test the integration and it's far superior to the USB stick. I'm actually shopping for an iPod as we speak.

I'm afraid of leaving the iPod in the car during extreme temperatures, but we'll see how it goes.

 

if you go the IOS route, don't get anything above IOS9 ... after upgrading to IOS10, my iPod starting needed to be unplugged/replugged in every other time i started car because the HU wouldn't "see" it. pretty annoying when you are out and make mutliple stops.
the problem with the IOS devices is that the sound sucks and there's no way to fix it with the crappy preset EQ settings.

currently using my old Galaxy Note 3 (rooted with Viper4Audio sound processing) left in the armrest, with Bluetooth. sounds SOOO much better than iPod/iPhone. even my current phone with stock Samsung music player sounds a lot better. only downside is no album art, but that's a small sacrifice for the substantially better audio quality.

 

I always found BT streaming audio quality to be subpar (compared to playing mp3's on from a flash drive). I'd say if one drive can't hold everything then just use 2. It takes me months to cycle through.

that is usually the case, but not with the crappy Bose EQ.

you need to be able to tweak the EQ so the mids don't sound like mud, and the highs don't sound like there's a blanket over the speakers.

you can't do that with an IOS device or a flash drive.
