Aftermarket Heads Up Display (HUD)

Installed this aftermarket HUD. It plugs into your OBD port and turns on/off automatically. It displays your MPH, water temp, voltage and RPM. It automatically adjusts its brightness for daytime and night. It comes with a reflective film so you can see the image better but I opted not to use it. I can see the image just fine most of time except for direct sunlight.

Yes it just sits on top of the dash and reflects back on windshield. I secured it with 3m double-sided tape. The image above looks blurry but the HUD is pretty clear.

How does it look like during the day? How did you handle the wires? Does it require a separate power hookup or does it get it's power from the odbII connection? Anyway, looks cool!

Cool indeed, although I'm not sure how useful it is.
I always thought of a basic hud to be somewhat of a gimmick. These things have been around since late 80s and there is probably a good reason not many people cared about it.

The new ones with navigation and media information are sweet as you don't need to look at the main display to the right, but if it's just speed / temps it's sort of pointless - all that information is already right in front of you.

I had a '93 240sx with the factory HUD. It only displayed speed, but I really loved it. I find it much easier to quickly read whilst driving than a typical sweeping speedometer. My eyes arent that great though (contacts with pretty serious correction) so it may just be it takes me longer to refocus than some people.

I like the HUD in the OP, most of the aftermarket ones tend to be too large amd have way to much going on.

This is the one I got from Amazon. There are tons of them all made in China of course. I tried to pick one that wasn't to colorful. I might get the more expensive one though because it has a built in flip up screen that reflects on it instead of your windshield. See attached pics.

Its pretty bright even during the day. But once you get direct sunlight on your windshield its hard to see. I might get the flip up screen for it so that it will be clearer. There is 1 wire that hooks up to your OBD port (provides power). The wire is flat so you can hide it better. I rand it under the A-pillar and also below the windshield. The wires are not visible this way.

Yes there will be naturally a delay as the info goes thru the obd cable to the HUD unit. However, you can adjust the offset of the unit's RPM and MPH to closely match your actual. The speed on mine is spot on and the RPM is very close to the actuals.
