I have an older 30GB iPod classic plugged into vehicle via the OEM cable. It seems to work OK and it does keep the device charged. The problem is that it frequently drops the iPod and screen freezes with iPod not connected warning. I usually switch to radio and after a few minutes may or may not just pickup the iPod signal again. It is frustrating, the iPod was used so not sure is it most likely the cable or the iPod I should be looking at?

only way to be sure is to try another cable - if it does the same, try another ipod.
