My Front Door Speaker Swap

My first mod to my car, I changed out the front door speakers. I have the base system with backup camera and no nav. The sound quality sucks! The bass is muddy, distorted and thin. The highs are also harsh and not detailed at all. I purchased the Kenwood KFC-P907 component system. I'm keeping the stock head unit and may add an amp later. It's just to much of a pain to swap the head unit and I like the stock look anyway.

Here's a comparison of the two sets. There's basically almost no magnet on the stock speaker. Ironically, the magnet on the tweeter is larger than the one on the woofer.

I cut off the large connector that split the wires between the woofer and tweeter, why have an unused connector anyway? The thing is for the Blows(Bose) system anyway.

Drilled a small hole for the wires and just put butyl putty on it to make it waterproof. Please excuse the hairy ape legs.

Also, tucked the crossover up against the top and ziptied it up there.

Everything all hooked up. I solder when I can.

I made my own spacers and used butyl tape behind the speaker and the spacer in order to seal it all up.

Had to mount the tweeter using a little ingenuity:

All closed up it looks stock. The sound is quite a bit better. The highs are much more detailed and the bass is a lot cleaner and punchier. It doesn't seem to hit any harder but it does dig a bit lower. The system badly needs a sub. I'm going to do the rears with a set of coaxials and put a very small 10" or 12" sub in the back with the smallest enclosure I can get away with.

I don't need to go boom, boom, boom down the street like some kid. Just want a little nice system that doesn't sound like hammered dog ****.

Is that all you added? No mats on the door and not cleansweep or BIT 10? What sub and box are you going with?

Nope, no Dynmat or anything. Just some entry level speakers. Not looking to throw a whole bunch of money at it. Let's face it, when you're competing with all that road noise it's hard to get the kind of fidelity you get from a home system unless you spend obscene amounts of money.

Haven't decided on the sub yet. It's not going to be anything super fancy. Just enough to give me a little bottom end.

Are your stock door speakers the 10' sub? If so how did you mount the aftermarket speakers? I saw that you have a spacer, did you make that or you bought it?

The 10" speakers are for the Bose system. The stock system has 6 1/2" speakers. I made the spacers myself, it was pretty easy. I tore the original speaker apart and traced the outside, then I took the template for the cut out for the new speaker and cut out the middle. Easy peasy.
