What turns on the backup camera
Ok, So i had a crazy idea, I really liked the nexus 7 install but i was thinking of a way to put my phone screen on my non nav 2013 sedan. I have the backup camera. There are 4 wires to it, it looks like its camera signal, gound, -12 and +12volts. I was wondering if I got a hdmi to analog adapter I could make a splitter and when not in reverse display my phone on my stock non nav screen. will the camera only come on when it is in reverse or do it automatically come on when ever it senses a powered video signal? If that is the case I could make a switch that can switch it back and forth. But if something else switches it over it would be a no go. What do you guys think?
If I recall correctly after studying the FSM for a unrelated project, the camera receives a signal from the AV Controller when you put the car in reverse gear. Now I do not know for sure if this signal actually provides power to the camera or if it just allows the controller to send the camera feed to the screen. The FSM will tell you more, unfortunately I don't have my iPad with me else I'd pull it up and check.
Good luck with your project!

The camera is connected directly to the AV Controller. When the car is put into reverse gear, a signal is sent to the controller which supplies 6-volt power to the camera. The video signal is then sent to the display. I'm sure you could wire it to work differently. Check the FSM- they are a priceless resource with any modification project.
