iPhone 5 - No alert sounds when connected to BT audio

This is my first apple product.. so excuse me if im stupid:

When I connect my iPhone5 for Bluetooth Audio I will only hear txt messaging sounds if I have BT selected. If I put the radio on any other audio source and someone txts or emails me I will not hear the sounds, the phone only vibrates. On my blackberry when I wanted to stream music I would just switch to BT on the radio, but when not streaming I would still hear my txt message and email sounds.

Anyone know what is going on?

I think the problem is with the your phone's OS compatibility with our car's audio system. Just like your situation my car's audio system doesn't alert when I receive text messages on my Android and Apple OS based phones. But I know when I connected my brother's Windows OS based phone via bluetooth it will actually read the text back.
