Replacing OEM Non-Nav w/ OEM Nav
Replacing OEM Non-Nav w/ OEM Nav
Hey everyone! I know this may be a noob question but, I was wondering what the feasibility of me replacing my OEM Non NAV unit with an OEM Nav unit is? Any suggestions, tips, advice? I just bought an '08 G37s w/o Nav, and was wondering if it was possible. If it is, is it worth it? What cost would I be looking at? Thanks in advance!
Yea I saw that post and looked at the threads. I was actually asking more about using the factory units. Really I just want to know what the cost factors of this would be so I can see if it would be worth it.
It would not be feasible at all......you would pretty much have to have your entire car rewired to my knowledge. I have a friend ask Infiniti retailer, and they would not even give him a quote, because the price and labor was astronomical.
if you want nav. i would sugguest this method. It's 100x better than the stock navi anyways. I will do it once i jailbreak my iphone

It's absolutely feasible. I'm tired of hearing all the pessimistic people giving wrong information. "No, its not feasible to add navi" "not feasible for manual tranny swap" "No you cannot upgrade to the 2010 navi" Everything can be done quite easily as long as you have the knowledge and skills to do it.
If you have electronic skills or can find a person/shop with electronic skills, this can easily be done. Dealership is the last place to go for these things. There is zero creativity at dealerships. If something is broken or needs to be added, dealership will only know to replaced the entire part.
You can purchase screen + navigation + misc parts for under $1000 total. I would suggest that you find these parts with pigtails attached. Then it's just a matter of wiring them according to the factory manual.

D_S_CUSTOMZ thanks for the advice, and knowledge. Thats exactly what I wanted to find out. AnJing408, thanks as well for the link, that looks like a decent alternative, but not as clean as I would like. I dont really need the nav, it would be an added luxury, but only for the right price.
Thanks again everyone, much obliged!

ModMe, I agree everything is feasible, but if I am gonna spend $1000+ would it not be better for me to just get the DirectUs Prodigy unit? If I installed the factory unit would I have the ability to use all the voice recognition commands as well?
This is one of those creativity things...
You don't really know if cars w/ handsfree but w/o NAV are wired a little differently for the mic (probably not).
If you have a car w/o handsfree and want to add nav, you need to add everything else related to hands free (namely mic, steering wheel) to get it, and who knows how much complexity those two components will add.

1000 was a safe over estimate. Recently on ebay, a set of screen and navigation unit sold for 150. If you shopped around, you can get the whole setup for less than $500.
The navigation unit is the same a/v unit that controls radio, CD player, voice command, Ipod, and Music box. Not only will you have the ability to use all the voice recognition, you will also get the Compact Flash and Musicbox 9.3GB storage.
In the end it's your call. I personally like OEM navigation better than any aftermarket ones. It preserve the luxurious nature of the car.

Modme, I agree with you about keeping the luxurious nature of the car, thats why Ive been hesitant to bite the bullet on an aftermarket unit. Thanks for the info again!
Cruzmisl, I have the bluetooth, and handfree, so I use voice for all that, just didnt know if that would convert in to being able to use the voice rec with the nav like the stock unit with nav do. Cheers mate!

Did anyone ever figure this out? I would love to attempt this!! I'm looking on eBay right now and see entire set ups for <$600.00 but may need a NAVI car to see what is missing from my NON-NAVI

He has said multiple times that he is not going to do a write-up on this, and I can't really blame him. If you want to take this on, look over his posts on this issue for tips and follow the FSM wiring diagrams.
