Battery Capacity

I have a US car, and when I did an audio install this weekend I was a bit surprised how small the battery was. I suppose in most of the US you are not too worried about cold cranking amps... but even with the demands of a subwoofer amp, I wonder if this little battery will manage. On top of that -20 is not unheard of in the winter here. I am running a 600w RMS amp do you think I should get a higher capacity battery?

So... is this a replacement battery or the one that came in your G? I am assuming that you have a Canadian car...

Should have known... I have never seen a battery rated in watts before... and Giga is 10E9 which is huge. Anyway... have you looked at your battery under the lovely plastic cover? Mine is a lot smaller than the tray that it sits in... and while it may be OK for southern climates... I am a bit dubious about it up here.

Probably wouldn't hurt to put an Optima in there.

I don't imagine that the seat warmer is light drain, but it would be nothing like a 600W amp that will pull in the vicinity of 50 amps on full load. I guess that I will be dropping in a big battery before winter...

There is a brand marketed up here called "yellow tops"...often used in extreme audio applications... I wonder if it is similar to the battery you describe.

Yellow tops are Optima's but there are many similar batteries. I used to run two 12" W6s on a 1400.1 with the stock battery. It lasted over 3 years and is still going. I do live in South Florida so it was only below 50 two days a year. You can see the light dimming slightly especially when you first begin driving but as long as you're not consistently driving 2-3 and turning off the car, it will stay charged. Maybe invest in a cap, I'm sure the battery can handle cold whether and even though the AMP is 600W unless you have a W7 or something comparable, it not using more than 300, or so.

Thanks for the info DiamondG... I am running an Alpine Type R (500w RMS), which is not in the same league as the W7 but probably close to the W6. I don't know much about JL so my comparison may be off, but my guess is that the W7 is similar to the Alpine type X (1000w).

Still, even with the type R, I can feel my hair move and all the mirrors are vibrating I am pretty happy with it especially considering the small, non ported enclosure.
