So I did manage to image the drive, but the image includes the corrupted files so really don't think it will do us much good. interestingly the other partitions seem totally fine, it's just that main system one.
This is what we SHOULD be seeing (from the 2009 image)
Then, I put the GT-R drive into my test rig. Obviously not expecting it to do anything, and sure enough HDD error... probably the same error you were seeing.
My test rig has the boot-up re locking function disabled, so the drive still remains unlocked.
Not really sure if there is anything left to do at this point, anyone got any ideas? This is a perfect example of why we need image backups though. These cars are getting older and older and the drives are all going to start failing.....
I have cloned the 2009 image of yours and will see what that does. My other option I have left is to try and purchase a drive from Legertas, but he wants to sell me both the drive and the HU system board when I actually just wanted to see if I could just buy the HDD image if possible.
Yeah man, no problem. Sucks I couldn't be more help
(I was also excited to see what the GT-R drive would do on my test unit, was hoping we can finally get that MFD!)
Give the 2009 image a try, hopefully that at least gets your car back up and running. Hopefully we can eventually get images of all the different versions of software..
Since I've got the test rig back out again, i'll play around with getting the SSD to work again. Also, thanks to thescreensavers, i have another SSD coming to test out.
Out of curiosity, what happens if he uses a non-GTR hard drive? Are they locked to VIN? IE, would it work, just only give him the functionality of the donor car?
As I understand it, there is a configuration file that tells the unit what car it is in, and that determines what is shown.
From what I have seen all the hardware and software is the same... which makes sense from a manufacturing point of view.
^ Right, and I did find that configuration section in the console last time when i was messing with this (farther back in the thread i think i posted it)
But there is still a distinction between the two generations of head units:
2010 + G Hard Drives contain all the GT-R files (we have seen this from digging through the files).
- This means that the 2010+ units can be unlocked / converted for GT-R functions (which we saw from those Russian forum posts) with the console access. I just don't have a 2010+ system to test with to try and do this.
2007-2009 G Hard drives don't have GT-R files. So this means that they actually did have two different images for the earlier cars. So that leaves us with some questions:
- If he puts the 2009 image on his GT-R, will it just function as a G head unit without those features? OR will it just crash looking for files which don't exist?
- If we get a GT-R image and pop it in the G head unit, what'll happen? I have a feeling it will either just work, or I'll have to change the configuration ID in the console to the GT-Rs.
But yea, all the hardware is identical. It just comes down to software, the image itself in the gen 1 system (07-09), and likely literally just a car configuration ID in the 2010+ gen 2 system. Nothing appears to be VIN locked, and that wouldn't make much sense from a manufacturing point of view either.
I'm not really sure if the bootup is faster or slower. It seems to sit on a black screen for a second or two before doing anything. It seems to work fine until you try the map. if i hit map it goes to the warning screen and then hangs on the OK. Also, I did like 10+ power cycles and SOMETIMES the maps worked after a few minutes. It's pretty random. I dunno what's up. A new SSD is coming, so we'll see
aw man, i really thought it would work. the only other thing we can try is I can upload the full drive image i made with win32diskimager (rather than the macrium), but its a 40gb file..... no idea where I can drop that.
Also when I google that error, wow, a shocking amount of GT-Rs have hard drive failures. I wonder why. (I guess they experience more shock / G forces???)
^^Have you tried a linux based tool to do the backup? arcronis backup/restore, clonezilla, etc. Look in diskpart, i wonder if there's some other partitions present too¿?
I've only tried macrium and win32diskimager. But, I've always have success with win32diskimager. I've used clonezilla before but I don't think it lets you create an image, just clone drive to drive (i only used the bootable one) The two cloned drives I have were done with that and booted up fine. There are 4 partitions which need to be copied over, i posted a screenshot of how it should look in disk manager.
I'm creating another image of the G37 drive now with only allocated partitions so it should be a little bit smaller, it's still going to be like 30GB. need to figure out where to upload it.
When I was getting the HDD failure error from my old drive, every once in a while I would get this map error instead. So I wonder if the map error is when it is able to load some of the files and not all, but gives a map error when it can't find the files it is looking for.
The HDD error might just be that it can't find anything at all or at least the initial bootstrap.
I wouldn't mind trying to help out with tinkering on a 2010+ system. I'll have to re-read this thread again since it's been a while, but I wouldn't mind getting a second hard drive to image and put in just to keep my original one safe. If I get bored I'll try to remember to take my drive out and at least make an image of it to have preserved.
