I think Rochester had to use some pliers to get his off, but in your case, since something else is moving while you turn, it could complicate things further.

How did you get your shift boot off while the **** is still there, and without lifting the bezel?

  • Two people.
  • One large channel lock wrench securing the shaft under the boot.
  • One large channel lock wrench to un-screw the ****.
  • A willingness to accept that the OEM **** will likely get trashed.

Some people get lucky, and can do it themselves, by hand.

Also, mine never "broke loose" as others have described. In fact, it never turned freely until the last couple of threads. And there are a lot of threads.

Oh! So that dirty rag is actually the underside of the leather boot? I missed that completely. I suspect you've been slowly turning the **** on the shaft by hand, but I sure wouldn't be strong-arming that thing without securing the shaft while turning it.

Good luck, buddy.

Let's see pics of the **** you're wanting to install.

After I ripped the leather on the **** I said fck it and put some vice grips on the top and eventually got it to break free. Be sure you are trying to turn it from the top and not the bottom.

^ Yeah that's the same mistake I made, it's not going to come off from that area. You have to turn it from the upper portion.
