I switched over to my 3 season wheels/tires yesterday. Woohoo!!! My baby is back! No more wallowing and spongy road feel. She feels sharp and tight.

BTW, I wanted to find out the weight difference (if any) between my winter set up and stock. I broke out the bathroom scale and did a weigh-in.
So;
Sailun winters on 17" steelies = 52.5 lbs,
Stock 17" rims with Mich MXV4s = 47 lbs

5.5 lb reduction per corner!!

 

If you think there is a difference going from winter to all season grand touring tires, you should try dedicated summer tires

 

I was going to do that earlier in the week. Luckily I didn't because it snowed a few inches here in PA on the 1st day of spring

The MXV4 isn't a three-season tire. If you're already swapping tires because of winter, why not actually use a performance summer tire? I don't get it. If I had to guess, you're biding your time before buying summer wheels, yes?

However, I do get your excitement. Waiting for April myself. Just a few more weeks.

MKV4's??? Dude, my 1.8t Jetta had those as OEM tires. Good tires for a whatever car. But seriously...those are your "spring/summer" tires? Wait till you try some pole-positions or something similar. You'll feel like you need the chiropractor the next day. I feel like quoting Charter.

Man, I wish I waited. I put my 3 season wheels\tires on 2 weeks ago when Chicago had some 60 degree days. BIIIIG mistake! It snowed bad here last week and just snowed again today. Talk about flirting with disaster... That was the first and last time I ever switch out my wheels before April.

 

I was about to throw on my wheels yesturday night, comes to find out its about to snow tomorrow......

 

After this happened on Tuesday to one of my winter tires:




I was forced to put on my summer wheels/tires (O.Z. Ultraleggera's with Dunlop Sport Maxx RT's). My G is gonna be slip sliding away now if it gets too cold. If it snows again, like it did on Monday after we were in the 70's last week, I'm afraid I'll be using up some vacation time.

On a more positive note, the Costco road hazard pro-rated the tire at 6/32nd's tread and they claimed the tire had 8/32"s new despite it truly being 10/32nd's, which saw me get $170 back from the road hazard warranty when the tire originally cost me $205 nearly 5 years ago.

The downside, though, is that since the Pilot Alpin PA3 no longer exists, I'll have to buy 4 new winter tires this fall, which is for the best anyways.

Wow, glad that was all that happened (unless we're missing part of the story).

 

I don't think I hit anything; was just driving along, felt a pop, looked in my rear view and saw a chunk of something get flung into the air and found what's pictured. The tire was used for 5 Chicago winters so with that and my preference to run semi-high tire pressures (36 psi for my winter tires), I wasn't doing these tires any favors.

Regardless, the extended weather forecast looks copacetic for my summer tires so I'm happy. It's always a joyous day when the winter wheels/tires get to come off the car!

 

Roads are fine now, with the sun shining all day today. But we had a full 1" of heavy snow last night.

Winter is not over, guys.
