Powder Coating Wheels

I'm interested at getting my sport wheels powder coated. The rims are in decent shape but I want a different shade of grey or silver. I'm wondering how long it takes and if I have to remove the wheels and tires myself or if the shop does it. It may not be possible for me if the vehicle is down too long.

Depends on what shop you go to. I'd go somewhere that can do it all ie mount, balance, and powder coat them. As far as time goes your best bet is to call a shop directly. I'd say a day or two tops depending on how busy they are.

I agree, it depends on where you go. Better shops will have the capability to mount and dismount tires for you, but this is not always the case. Be ready to pay extra for them to do this though. Also, you will need to have your wheels and tires rebalanced. Powdercoating is not applied perfectly even and these high and low spots will alter the balance. My guess for a good shop would be about $100 per wheel to dismount tires/powdercoat/remount tires/and balance.

Jack, keep in mind if you get them powdercoated to be very observant on the mounting base of the wheel. Powdercoating can leave high spots on that flange and like Ryne mentioned it can affect other parts of the wheel that will alter the weight of the wheel. Powdercoating is very hard but brittle so if you have to sand down the flange to remove any high points take care and start w/ a less aggressive paper so you won't chip off the paint.
