Worth switching from a 17” rim (O.E. 225/55-17) to a larger rim?

Switching from Winter to Summer Tires –

It seems that the Michelin Pilot Super Sports are the best Summer tire choice, but they don’t make them for the 17” wheels (O.E. 225/55-17) on my daily driver 2009 G37x. My second choice for tires are the 17” Dunlop SP Sport Maxx TT or RT. I wouldn’t need to buy new wheels if I went with the Dunlops.

I’ve taken a long look at existing threads and still don’t know how to choose. Thanks in advance for any expertise you might share.
  1. Is it worth it to buy bigger wheels in order to get the Michelin Super Pilot Sports?
  2. If it is worth it, how much bigger should I go, 18”, 19”? I don’t care very much about looks, just performance/value.
  3. Is there any front/back staggering necessary?
  4. What are the best wheels to buy? I don’t care very much about looks, just performance/value.
  5. Do I have to pay Infiniti to tune the TPMS light every time I switch between my Winter 17”s and my Summer tires/wheels or is that something the local tire shop can update?

You have to gauge your driving style and desires. Is the PSS better in the summer? Yes. Do you drive enthusiastically/aggressively? If so, then yes, maybe you would derive more enjoyment from the PSS.

Keeping in mind, if you change wheel size, your suspension is going to change as well. In which case, you will need a slight drop in ride height to compensate for the increase in wheel size.

1) Yes.
2) 19" is usually the optimal size for wheels when driving aggressively. Keeping in mind, 19" tires cost more than 20".
3) This depends if you have an X or not. If not, then stagger.
4) Too many to list. Depends on your level of "performance" and definition of value.
5) You can do it yourself, or you can go to a shop. I know Walmat does it for $10.

Finally, just do some more research. Know the pros/cons of moving up in wheel size and what supporting modifications you should have to meet your desired level of driving.

You might look into the setup that MACS is running, they're 18s, lightweight, affordable, a quality name brand, and should work well w/ the PSS. Should be able to find 18" PSS for not too crazy expensive. Since you're driving an X, having the same size on all 4 corners makes sense, and since this will be a dedicated summer set (and summer tires wear pretty quick) having them rotatable will add some extra life. Here's the link~
