Potenza tires

Hi...At my age I should know better, but I got the G37S without checking the tires and found out later that they were Summer tires . I live in two places: southern florida with it's beautiful sunny climate; and the PA poconos in the summer when Florida is unbearable.

But I also like to go skiing...so every winter we spend a couple of weeks at home and in Vt doing what we love.

Now I'm worried: will my beautiful GS slip and slide all over the place when I do the skiing thing? what to do, what to do.

My stupidity (or just plain ignorance) is haunting me!!!

I recommend using a different car for skiing, how will you carry your skiis anyways? You'd need an AWD with Snow tires to drive through snow from what I've learned

Yes I highly recommend you purchase a Subaru WRX STi, or at least a Legacy sedan...or a Taurus SHO, aaah the possiblities are endless.

I have the same tires and they handle just fine in the cold/rain; now in the snow you will need to switch to snow tires anyway; summer or all season tires are inadequate for driving in the snow even if you have all wheel drive.

Wait a minute... aren't you 106? What the heck are you doing skiing anyway grandpa? You know if you fall your hip will break easily and take 2 years to heal!

I kid, I kid Ged. It's great that you have your life and affairs in order to be able to summer in the Poconos (beautiful) every year and take the time for a ski trip in VT. I'm just jealous. You've got it going on man. I hope to be at that place in life one day soon.

Buy the cheapest set of wheels you can find to fit the G with a good set of snow tires. Use them just for when you go to skiing. I wouldn't drive in snow, ice, or extreme cold on the OEM Bridgestones, summer tires aren't made to be used below about 40 I think.

Hey, wait a minute...I'm only 81 and have a full life ahead of me. Methinks I will switch cars with my son for the skiing trip: the 4motion VW I gave him for my G.

Thank you all for your kind responses...

Glad you've got a good sense of humor Ged. Good solution driving the VW. Of course it is a good excuse to buy another 4WD car just for the ski trips...

yeah being RWD is bad enough in the snow. summer tires have like zero snow traction.
the xS came with all season tires.

that's why a lot of users actually have a set of winter tires and rims they mount as needed. generally a smaller diameter, fatter wheel etc. I mean f you're going to take this route you might as well buy purpose tires and not worry about like side wall rigidity. For me I don't like to drive a sedan to the snow so i didn't bother going for the awd.

I did hear those continental Extreme contacts are pretty shnazzy.

I replaced my RE050As with a set of Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position tires last month. No complaints so far.

I agree, I put the Pole Positions on my M35X and they were an
incredible improvement over the RSAs. Quieter, better wearing
better cornering, better in rain and snow...but not on ice
My G37XS came with Dunlop Sport Maxx tires....an even
greater improvement over the Pole Positions in every
respect including price.....But again we're talking about
a 4wd car.

If I had RWD I used for ski trips, I would consider how many trips and
how much snow driving you do. Good snow tires will get you the best
performance and will even outperform many 4wds with all season tires.
But....they wear very quickly on dry/warmer pavement, it takes
time to put them on and take them off, and you need a place to
store them when not in use.

You could rent a 4WD for ski trips....expensive I'll bet

Or you could buy another car that's 4WD..

Chains would not be good on that nice G.

I assume those are all season tires. Is the ride better in cold weather? The RF050s seem to be pretty stiff in cold weather, but are fine in warm weather.

Yes, the RE960AS are ultra high performance all season tires. I would say that in general, the ride is a little firmer due to the harder compounds used. In cold weather I'd say the RE960AS ride a little better than the stock RE050As. As Black Betty mentioned earlier, the RE050A's are not supposed to be used below 40 degrees as the softer rubber hardens up. Basically, you're giving up some grip/performance at the high end for something that will allow get you home in cold, rainy weather and will last you much longer.
