That makes sense, yeah you can pick up great deals and there's tons of those in so cal but their hit and miss. Very rarely are you fortunate enough to find one that doesn't require an instant 10-20k in repairs/upgrades.

I have no idea how you guys deal with that kind of expense. $250K is a nice, 2800 sq/ft custom built luxury home here. $400K and your next door neighbor starts for the Texans or Rockets. Literally.

Hopefully you get a great price when you sell your crib Lance.

It's all about location, location, location. Minimum wage is also less in Texas than in California! Anywho you guys can live in tornado alley and I'll stay here in beautiful sunny Southern California.

Good luck Lance and it was nice talking to you today.

A job opportunity has been presented, and I'm considering taking it. Its located near L.A.

It would be a drastic change from my way of living here, the weather, the job, my career, my family....everything.

PROS
My dream job, endless opportunies
Driving my Nismo year-round rather then 6-7 months out of the year

CONS
No 401k retirement
Cost of living increase (lateral pay, so actually taking a paycut)
Moving across country
Leaving family/friends behind
selling my house (2400sq ft, 3 car garage)

ANNNY feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks Everyone!!!
By now the chorus of cost of living should be common place but Ill say it again. Six figures in california is lower middle class income. Southern CA is cheaper than Northern but depending on what part of the LA basin, you could be tasting your air rather than just breathing it. California is predominantly a liberal pro government state so if that sort of thing irks you, consider fair warning. A lot of your take home is going to be consumed by food, fuel and taxes. The weather is usually great but consider its an hour plus to anywhere besides your back yard and you get the picture that a weekend isn't that much time to do anything. Driving your Nismo, yeah, with 8 million other drivers all jockeying for the same five lane road. I live 52 miles from my work and thats 1.5 -2 hours each way I moved to the Bay area from Missouri and the culture shock is a real thing; Ive lived here over 25 years and Im about done with Cali. Looking forward to retirement in a much more gentile, conservative and sensible locale. California is the land of opportunity. Get in, make your fortune and get out.

400K would get you an 800 square foot condo in San Jose. I've seen houses starting at $450K but I wouldn't live in them or the areas where there located!

Some interesting info with less bias and more objectivity here:
Top 101 City Lists

Consider that people who've lived in one place or region will have a less objective viewpoint and more bias, positive or negative. People who haven't travelled to other areas of the country have less of a frame of reference to judge by. And most people are going to root for the home team.

I was sitting here typing all the reasons not to do it, then I got to thinking, if I had the chance I would take it. I have lived lots of places they all have down falls, just do it as you are young and can take advantage.

I 100% took this into consideration when you originally posted your post yesterday.

Where is you job located at, is it actually downtown? I live about 50 miles East of LA and don't commute into downtown for work but know a lot of people that do. If you don't want to put miles on your g you can always take the train into the city.

The "lifestyle" that people talk about ranges ALL over the place depending on where you live and what you are looking for from Urban, to the Beaches, to the burbs and the cost of living ranges just as much. Yes it will always be more than a lot of places in the country but for example we were looking at moving outside of Seattle or Portland and found the suburbs there to be just as much as the house we just bought in SoCal. The thing to realize here that is the biggest difference is the suburbs are still highly populated and city after city, there is not gap between towns like there are a lot of other places. I have nothing to do with downtown besides Laker or Kings games but constantly hear from people that live closer to downtown that I live in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do, granted the population is still over 4 million in this "region"

If you want another opinion or some more specifics just pm me and I would be glad to give you my thoughts coming from someone who has lived here my whole life but also looked at moving a couple of times previously.

And we will have a SoCal Driven sticker waiting for you when you get here!
