Moving to Cali

Hey all!

I want to start by saying I hope this is in the correct spot.

I live in Jersey yet after graduating I just landed a big job so I'm moving to Cali in two weeks. I was just curious if you all had any suggestions for places to move / places to avoid. I'm going to rent an apt/condo, I'm 22 so I'm looking for an area with a "young" vibrant scene. I'll be working out of either South Gate or Carson facilities with my Company so it'd have to be within those regions. I'm looking for a good mix of people, diverse crowd. I've been looking at the Huntington Beach, Hermosa, Manhattan, or Venice Beach areas, however I know nothing about these areas, any input would be helpful. If anyone is familiar with the Hoboken or Morristown scene in Jersey that is what I'm looking for. I'm looking for a roommate as well so if any one knows any good sites to look it'd be a big help.. Thanks

David.

South Gate and Carson are not the best places to live in. If you don't mind commuting, I'd look for some place in Orange County or closer to the water like those beach cities you've mentioned. I've lived in Torrance, work in Manhattan Beach, live in Orange county.

1 bedroom for Redondo Beach/Manhattan Beach area will be pretty $$. Torrance apt is a little cheaper and the area is still nice. More of a residential scene though, quieter. Redondo beach/Manhattan beach has some bars and a younger beach goer/surfer crowd, if you're into that.

Not sure what you're looking for. You can always move closer to Westwood or Santa Monica area. Very young and vibrant since it's closer to UCLA. W00t.

the cities you have mentioned are nice except for venice...kinda trashy..kinda transient. good for a certain people, though. DTLA has some nice lofts/condos these days but freeway traffic would kill you (which it would too if you lived by the beach and took the 405 or the 105 to work (youll never get used to it)

check out redfin.com for condos/home sales. its a good site and has a nice interface.

Congrats on the job, youre young and youre working...not many people can say that these days.

Thanks a lot Bruin! Yea I only have to commute to Carson or South Gate, although I do not personally know anyone out there; friends of friends have told me to avoid living in South Gate and Carson.. I'm thinking Westwood would be cool. Any thoughts on the commute time from Westwood/Santa Monica to South Gate, mapquest doesn't factor in traffic but says thirty minutes, I'd be on the 405 for about 15/18 miles?

I got a job with Maersk trainee program

I was going to guess something in the shipping industry. Carson has a big industrial area for import/export/shipping.

Westwood WOULD be cool, as long as you're ok dealing with college kids. But I think at 22, moving to a new state, living closer to a college town might be a good idea. Easy to mingle with the singles too . *wow having dirty college party flashbacks*

Santa Monica should be a little cheaper than Westwood. I think it'd be a better match because you can have your peace when you want it and not have to deal with obnoxious drinking fests. Plenty of bars and young people too.

I think you'd be taking the freeway against traffic so it should be ok. Check sigalert during rush hour for better estimated time.

South gate: you'd be taking 405S -> 105E
Carson: you'd be taking 405S -> 91E

As nice as OC is, I don't think you want to deal w/ traffic commuting back and forth. Keep the commuting distance to a minimum. I would recommend Torrance. Close to everything.

Yea, I don't want to be dealing with traffic, although I'm going out to work I want the best experience for the two years. Thanks for the information. Hopefully I can see you all at a G meet once I get back into another 37.
