Front windshield replacement - Houston area.

So after having 5 rock chips fixed over the last 2.5 years, I got a 3" crack on the windshield this morning.

I am probably going to need to replace it soon. Do you guys have any recommendations for a shop in Houston area? Any tips what to do and what no to do before/after replacement?

I'd like to replace it with an "OEM" one, can a shop get one? Or I have to go to my local dealership?

Thanks a bunch.

A shop can get the OEM one--from Infiniti. It's a LOT more than an aftermarket. Just ask to see the aftermarket one before they put it in your car. If you see ripples, decline it, ask them to get another. I had to make the shop do mine again because it had ripples across the top of the first one.

Thanks Mudgen. So you think it's OK to go aftermarket? How much do I expect to pay? Is it necessary to not drive the car for a couple of hours (or overnight?) so everything is dried off? Have you had any wind noise since you had it replaced?

Can someone recommend me a good shop in Houston?

I don't know about the cost, actually. I have State Farm with $0 glass deductible, did not get a ticket or even have to sign anything. The glass man told me that an OEM windshield would cost me $200-$300 out of pocket difference as insurance would only cover the aftermarket. I'm happy with the 2nd aftermarket windshield, which they had me inspect and approve before they re-did the job.

You can drive the car right away, but need to keep a window or the sunroof cracked for 24 hours to keep pressure differences from disturbing the sealant before it cures. I've had no wind noise or other issues since the replacement.

Go with either APT, PPG, or Pilkington for OEE glass (OE quality). OEM glass is usually double the price.

check with your insurance company, if you have comprehensive coverage (which you should with a 40k car) it may be covered, or compensated for. i took mine to safelite when i had chips and they were real helpful.
