What makes a thread Official?

I’ve noticed a lot of threads lately marked “Official,” like these:

Official SRG Photoshop request thread
Bay Area Official Chat Thread
Official Vossen G37 Wheel Thread
Official Bay Area Meet Thread
Official Post your Doggy Pics
Official MA Sighting Thread

So I wonder how a thread becomes official. Does the OP have to request a permit of some sort from a mod? Does the applicant fill out a questionnaire listing his or her qualifications? Does IB conduct a background check? Well, I too would like to start some official threads. I’m thinking of:

• Official Drivers Past 65 Thread (a small but feisty group)
• Official 100% Stock Thread (even smaller)
• Official No Tint Thread (we’ve been in the closet for too long)

Any suggestions?

I can answer that. Like for Norcal Bay Area we have 2 of the Official threads you listed. We made those so we can make random posts without having to start a new thread every time we want to make a meet suggestion or feeler meet, or in the other Official Chat Thread is like our bay area chat lounge. It's like a mutual consensus within our community to utilize these threads to keep ourselves updated to the latest happenings easily and quickly (without having to search through different threads).

Well, I was only kidding around, but I do see your point. The only problem is when potential posters wanting to post on a particular subject don’t know that there’s an official thread on that topic already in existence. For example, this happened with the official doggy pics thread as there used to be two before they were combined. Whereas not everybody uses the search function, perhaps we need an Official Thread Forum where only official threads appear.

Somebody took an extra dose of Geritol today and is feeling feisty. You are hereby granted a dispensation to start any "Official" threads you deem necessary. I also nominate Chekov as Official Thread wrangler. It will be your job to make sure that all of the Official threads are kept in order and that only official things are in them.

Why, thanks BB. Now do I get a special line under my name like “OTW” and my ID in a different color?

Chekov, being the longtime resident Grump here, often posting, I think, simply to get a rise out of certain members, I think you would realize that the search function on this site is hardly effective much of the time. I say this because I am not a "noob"/"newb". I know my way around the forum. Yet, after a fruitless search for dog threads months ago, I created one of the duplicate threads for dog-owning enthusiasts. Despite what you may believe, I did not do it with the intent of spiking the blood pressure of the old, grouchy, discriminating members. When I realized a thread was already made on the topic, I private messaged ("PM'ed" to us hip, younger users) a moderator and requested a merge.

Do you know what happened? They merged the threads. I know - I couldn't believe it, either...

Regarding the search function I agree with you and that’s why I suggested it may be difficult to spot an existing official thread, and that was the point I was trying to make.

As far as my being the resident Grump here, please understand that I rarely post nonsense. I prefer to state my opinion as coming from an older prospective. If it comes out provocative with a little tongue-in-cheek, then it may serve some purpose.

I realize this thread was made with a hint of sarcasm at its base. I'm messing around, too. Believe it or not, I actually enjoy reading some of your posts...

With all the duplicate threads and posts that are made on this forum, sometimes an official thread, if used correctly is helpful in keeping information organized so that it can all be accessed in one thread instead of searching and finding 100 different unhelpful threads.

Yup. This guy is from New England. He has a degree in sarcasm. (we get our bachelor's degrees in middle school)
