How difficult or concerning is removing the aluminum face plate from the actual face (buttons, clock, etc section)?

I have read it is very easy to remove the whole assembly but I am concerned of separating the assembly. I am asking because I have the maple wood option and I would like to polish it without the buttons in the way.

 

if its easy, ITS EASY.. I had a whole radio assembly and never sold with IPL Aluminum trim

what year was this taken from? i want the really shiny trim on the newer gs but can't tell from these pics if theyre the shiny ones
