From: Framingham Ma,
Has to be software, I have paddles and drive with them 100% of the time, The only "delay" I have is under normal drive and theres no way is 3 sec, Like 1 maybe, under WOT they are instant and will even snap into gear, But I also have uprev.

I've noticed that shift speed also seems to depend on what else I'm doing (braking, full throttle, no throttle), which makes sense since the car is tossing all my inputs into some algorithms.

An example: if I downshift while braking, it's very fast (sub 1 second), but an upshift while off the throttle (hard acceleration to 5/6k, and then coasting with traffic) is much slower (1-3 seconds it seems)

Regardless of what the other poster said, a grounding kit made a BIG difference. My paddles are now very good (I drive with the paddles 100% of the time).

As other people have said, it does depend on driving conditions - on the throttle hard = very quick shifts. Shifting up off throttle and standard driving = more casual shifts. Downshifts while braking (hard driving) = very quick shifts.

Do I wish they were better? Yes, but the trans isn't a Dual Clutch. If they were bad, I wouldn't drive with them 100% of the time

I have seen videos of extremely expensive cars with similar or worse paddle lag

P.s. I have also had all the relevant trans software updates

I have an '09 g37xS. O thought the upshifts were long but only see them as about 1 full second. I haven't experienced 3 second shift times while using the paddles. I'm gonna check out the shift **** which I rarely use.

I'm glad to hear that 3 seconds isn't the norm. The paddles are back on my long list of mods.

Nobody has yet addressed the fact that the shift **** and paddles are both merely electrical inputs telling the car you want to shift. Regardless of algorithms, various inputs, and driving conditions...the car shouldn't behave any differently when you ask it to shift via paddles versus the shift ****.

WTH is going on here where the paddles shift slower than the ****?

Just tested as well as possible with both paddles and shifter. There is no difference that I can see between either. Both shifts take no longer than 1 second. Of course WOT in first gear you have to shift early cause you'll hit redline quick otherwise. But either hard on the gas or easy driving through town, the shifts are nearly identical. I have no grounding kit installed, but plan to do so. Hopefully I will see some better shift times. I did see a lag in down shifting when at really low speed/rpm (maybe 2 seconds at times) but that was about it. Just my experience with my particular car.

Can someone confirm Paddle Shifter behavior for me? I had a 2012 Maxima with them, so I know how they work on that car, but being a CVT, I want to see if it's the same for the G37.

Shift **** in D Mode

If you shift with the paddles, the gear changes, and you see the gear number in the dash display. Within a minute (usually less) if your driving isn't spirited and RPMs stay consistent, the car reverts back to fully automatic D mode.

Shift **** in DS Mode

If you shift with the paddles, the gear changes and you see the gear number in the dash display. However, you're now in manual mode, and it will hold that gear until you either go too fast or too slow for that gear. To get back into DS mode, you have to move the shift **** back to D, and then back to DS.

Does the G37 work this way too? I want to be sure that I can shift while in D mode and not have to be in DS mode in order to shift.

That is how it works. You can shift in D mode using the paddles/**** and it will automatically go back into full D mode after a few seconds. Or you can go into DS mode and stay in control of the shifting using the paddles/****.

how do you check whether your car has the wiring for installing paddle shifters? there are cutouts on the sides of my steering columns (i'm assuming that's where the paddle shifters wold go), but dont know if thats indicative of anything

I recall reading that if you have the Premium Package with the upgraded Bose audio, you are prewired for paddles. Or perhaps you need the Nav package as well...not sure.

It’s like a second.

But that second is very noticeable for me when up shifting. Downshifting is always quicker in DS manual mode of course. So unfortunately when upshifting I have to anticipate the shift point and do it early. I have uprev too but it doesn’t have any TCM calibration except for indirectly by tuning the torque management which will stiffen the shifts (which makes them quicker). The problem still persists with the upshift delay when in manual.
