Good Sunday drives
Good Sunday drives
Okay, I found a pretty good Sunday drive yesterday - good views, with twisties, fast straights. So if you've got a couple hours, I'd suggest this:
- Start at the north end of Hwy 35 (Skyline Blvd.), which intersects with Hwy 92 right before you go down to Half Moon Bay
- Go south on the 35 - mix of moderate curves and straights, and at the very end, turns into a one lane road for about 5 miles
- At the end of the one lane road, turn right onto Bear Creek - relatively steep, and crazy curves.
- At the end, turn left onto Hwy 9, which is moderately curvy and takes you right into downtown Santa Cruz.
So, anyone got suggestions for a good fun drive?

Tony . . .That route is an excellent run for cars and bikes alike. We have been running the route for quite a time now. The wife and I went this route to Santa Cruz then pushed on to the Monterey Sports & Classic car auction this pass weekend.
We have had 2 local runs via this route in the past 12 months. Perhaps, we may venture this route again before the end of the year.

Little more north of that, but Highway 36 East-West between Red Bluff (just off I-5) and Highway 101 in Fortuna (just South of Eureka) is a truly great drive.
Great twisting mountain roads interspersed with long (2 mile+) straights.
The road surface is predominantly good, but there are some areas where it is wise to slow down. Also watch for rock slides on some of the mountain areas. The heat in the summer can be extreme on the Eastern part (105+), but it tapers off as you get closer to the coast and gain elevation.
Lots of elevation changes (probably 4000 vertical feet at times), blasting through redwood groves and running with rivers for miles at a time, winding roads on the sides of cliffs that are kind of scary. Its a really cool scene.
The best part, though, is the traffic. There is none. This highway has been almost completely abandoned to the more efficient Highway 299.
For most of the trip it is entirely normal to pass one car every half hour at the most. One time I went a full hour, in the middle of the day in July (full driving season) without seeing another car.
Of course, no cars means no cops........highly recommended.
You can hook up with this highway either in Red Bluff (off of I-5, watch for sign), or in Redding (Take Placer road out to Igo, follow signs to Platina, this is a very fun drive in and of itself (about 26 mi. one way)).

Funny that you mentioned the 35 - I actually work on Skyline, about 5-7 minutes away from the 92/35 intersection.
It's an awesome drive and i have a blast everytime i bring the G up there. But the daily commute kinda sucks since i live out in Hayward. It's also hard to keep the car clean when i bring it up - the front gets covered with dead bugs and gets caked in dust and pollen. Doesn't help that the car sits in the sun all day. That's why i typically bring my old VW beater.
One word of caution - there are a lot of deer on Skyline. It seems that I see a dead deer in the middle or side of the road about once a month (and it's usually my co-workers that hit the deer).

Better yet, drive the same route going the opposite direction. This way leaves your options open to either driving more, or hitting the freeway to go home when you are around 92.
Welcome to an old trail my friends and I used to hit up every weekend (on bikes and cars)...
