Got screwed on my first G37x… learn from this

What’s up guys, just wanted to share this in case it helps someone. I’m 18 and was looking for something fun but still kinda cheap and relaible . Ended up finding a 2010 G37x coupe with around 200k km for $7,500 CAD on Facebook. Went to check it out , car looked pretty clean. Seller said it needed a fuel pump and had abit of surface rust. Also told me the front and rear subframes were replaced already. It had a catback and some nice rims too so I was kinda sold.I got him down to $6,500 but told him I only want it if it comes with a fresh inspection. He said yeah (his dad owns a small dealership so I trusted it).Couple days before I pick it up, he says the alternator is going bad and he’ll fix it. I waited, he replaced it, everything seemed good and I drove off happy.About 2 months later…I’m driving and I start hearing a loud clunking from the rear, like metal banging. I check under the car and the rear subframe is completely rotted — the camber arm mount literally snapped off and was just hanging there. That’s when I knew something was wrong.Took it to a shop and they found big rust hole hidden behind the rear fender liner , everything undercoated like crazy ,subframe was just spray painted, never replaced .So yeah… I got scammed. At the same time, I know it’s partly on me for not taking it to my own shop before buying. Ended up fixing it myself instead of paying crazy money. Found a subframe on car-part for $350, me and my friend swapped it. Whole job cost me under $500 instead of like $5–6k at a shop. Still love the car though. Been fixing up the paint and rust spots and I’m planning to go FBO then maybe turbo later. Just a heads up for anyone buying one: don’t trust seller inspections. Get your own done.

If I were purchasing any 10+ year old car in Canada or elsewhere with severe weather, I would be laser focused on oxidation, especially on the under carriage.

I grew up on the east coast in the era of 70s-80s cars and those were notorious for frame rails, floor/trunk pans that were completely rotted.

Good to hear you have things under control now. I've seen many on Reddit deal with these issues and source used parts from southwestern and sunbelt states, so there are lower cost options.
