Start with a budget. Figure out how much you're comfortable parting with on this project.

When it comes to exhaust mods, states have different rules. Find out what they are.

OK. Next up would be to identify what you want to replace... axle-back, cat-back, cats, headers. Although you're probably not going to be upgrading the OEM headers, not without a tune.

For $1000, odds are you'll be getting an axle-back or cat-back, and won't be replacing your catalytic converters. However a pair of test-pipes might be on the table. Once you figure out exactly what you want, then it's a matter of finding the part(s) to suit your budget. Most shops these days charge between $100 - $160 per hour, so unless this is a DIY project, a big part of that budget is time on the lift.

Most cost effective option is probably to isolate the broken piece and fix that. A cat-back under $1000 may be unlikely, but with an axle-back it may be possible?
