‘08 g37s coupe 6mt new owner

Hello all! I’m Chris and from the north SF Bay Area and about a month ago I came across my g for a decent price. I came from the Honda world and also had 2 s13’s, one with an SR the other with a stock ka24de. I’ve missed having a Nissan so I went on the hunt. It’s got 148,xxx and shifts really smooth but I’m getting a consistent p0300 and p2A03 and noticeable engine vibrations from about 1700rpms and up but still pulls like it should oddly enough. I’ve done a bunch of research seeing it could be numerous different things so I’m going to start with spark plugs and coil tube seals, debating on doing the valve cover gaskets while I’m there. I had the diff bushings replaced with whiteline bushings and I would highly recommend that for anybody looking to replace their worn bushings. Its great to meet you all and thanks for reading!

Welcome to the community @Vhr_dad

Can't recall the last time I saw a red coupe that clean.

Good thread on P2A03 here: https://www.myg37.com/forums/engine-...03-issues.html

P0300 is a random misfire if my memory serves me correctly. If a coilpack was bad, each has its own error code. Any idea what maintenance has been done? May need plugs and to have the throttle bodies cleaned.

Thank you! I actually read that article in the link already😊 as far as previous history I have none sadly. I’ve always wanted a red car but somebody repainted it at some point. I buffed and polished it and it looks better than it did but not by any means is it perfect. I’ll clean the throttle bodies, I’ve read that can solve certain issues too and being I don’t know the history, I want to keep it happy. I’ve also read horror stories about the vvel being tricky/temperamental😬 oil was changed before I got it as well as an alignment and A/C recharge and after 1,000 ish miles the oil is still super clean. I’m not sure if I want to do a stock rebuild on a spare motor on the side but I’m contemplating it only because I plan on keeping this car for a long time.

Things already done:
-2 front tires and resurface rotors (steering wheel vibrations)
-whiteline diff bushings (highly recommend)
-k&n drop in filters
-hood struts
-buffed, polished and detailed

Things to do:
-spark plugs/coil tube seals
-clean throttle bodies
-valve cover gasket (probably at a later date due to time constraints)

Down the road I want to flush trans, diff and coolant. At 150,000 I’ll change oil and try ester as I’ve read it helps with ticking since there’s a ticking noise at idle and will update on that at a later time. As far as spark plugs I’m going with NGK off rockauto as well as the seals

Hello, I'm not sure if you have gotten to it yet but, just a little heads up, to do the spark plug tube seals you will need the throttle body gaskets, valve cover gaskets and the upper plenum (intake manifold) gasket, since all those have to be removed to get to the spark plug tube seals. I was getting a consistent PO300 with a hesitation upon takeoff in my '11 coupe s 6mt and when I checked the real time misfire counts, it was all on bank one. Turned out I was getting oil down the spark plug tubes on all three of those cylinders because the seals were bad.

The tick you are hearing at idle is most likely injector pulse, it's normal. You can take a long screwdriver while the engine is idling and place the tip of it against one of the injectors and put the other end up to your ear and you can hear the tick prominently.

If you're going to use Nissan Esther oil, your best bet is to try to source it online like from Amazon. Nissan wants a pretty penny for their oil. Although, in lab tests, the Esther oil has the exact same results as 90% of the other brand name full synthetic oils. It's no better or worse.

^ thank you for the info on the needed gaskets! I have them all ready to go. I’ll be doing valve cover gaskets, spark plug seals inside the valve covers, going to check the coil seals at the end of the coils and replace if needed, throttle body cleaning and the intake gasket. I also want to peek inside the intake and see what the valves look like. I was a emissions inspector/“smog tech” for a few years so I wouldn’t say I’m a seasoned mechanic but I know my way around a motor and always wanting to learn more hence doing as much as I can myself. I’ll also have the help of my 9 year old son who’s super into cars lol be on the lookout for a build thread to start as I’ll be migrating my cars journey over there. Thank you all for the input and advice. Have a great weekend fellow g family!

I'm glad I saw this. I also just got my G, and noticed the ticking, and was wondering if something was up with the valvetrain. Whew!🫡
